Chapter 11: The Empire's New Queen

The view from the top floor of the Thorne Tower had always belonged to a man. For three generations, the mahogany desk at the center of the executive suite had been occupied by a Thorne patriarch. Today, that streak ended.

Khloe stepped into the corner office, the click of her Louboutin heels echoing against the floor-to-ceiling windows. She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit that commanded the room, a stark contrast to the soft maternity dresses she was once forced to wear. It had been exactly three months since baby Jonathan was born, and the city was still reeling from the hostile takeover that had ousted Marcus.

Behind her, Elias Vance entered, carrying a stack of leather-bound dossiers. He dropped them onto the desk with a heavy thud.

"The transition is complete," Elias announced, a rare smile crossing his sharp features. "The board unanimously approved your restructuring plan. The Cayman accounts have been repatriated, and the SEC has officially closed their investigation into the company. You are officially the undisputed CEO and primary trustee of Thorne Industries."

Khloe walked behind the desk, running her fingertips over the polished wood. She didn't sit immediately. She looked out over the Manhattan skyline. "And Marcus?"

Elias’s smile faded into a grim line. "His trial begins next week. The federal prosecutors aren't offering a plea deal. Given the sheer scale of the embezzlement and his attempt to flee, they are pushing for twenty years in federal prison."

Khloe nodded slowly. Twenty years. It was a lifetime. But it still didn't feel like enough for the terror he had inflicted upon her and her child.

"However," Elias continued, clearing his throat. "We have a new problem. A shark in the water who smells blood."

Khloe turned, crossing her arms. "Who?"

"Victor Sterling," Elias replied, tapping the top dossier. "CEO of Sterling Global. He’s been buying up the remaining 49% of minority shares through shell corporations over the last month. He just requested a formal meeting. He wants to buy you out, Khloe. And he’s not known for taking no for an answer."

Khloe scoffed, sitting in the heavy leather chair. It swallowed her slightly, but she refused to look small. "Victor Sterling is a vulture. He buys distressed companies, guts them, and sells the scraps. Thorne Industries is not distressed."

"No, but the public perception is shaky," Elias warned. "The media loves a scandal, and having a twenty-five-year-old former socialite with no CEO experience running a multi-billion dollar real estate empire makes the investors nervous. Sterling is going to use that against you."

Before Khloe could reply, the intercom on her desk buzzed. It was her newly appointed executive assistant.

“Ms. Thorne? Victor Sterling is here. He says he has an appointment.”

Khloe’s eyes narrowed. "I didn't schedule a meeting with Victor Sterling."

"He’s playing a power game," Elias muttered. "Barging in unannounced to show he doesn't respect your authority."

Khloe sat up straight, a cold, predatory calm washing over her. She remembered what Uncle Richard had taught her. Never let them see you sweat, and never let them dictate the rules of engagement.

"Send him in," Khloe said smoothly, pressing the intercom button.

The heavy oak doors swung open. Victor Sterling strode in like he already owned the building. He was a man in his late fifties, with silver hair slicked back and a custom Italian suit that screamed old, ruthless money. He didn't wait to be offered a seat; he simply dropped into one of the chairs opposite Khloe’s desk, crossing his legs.

"Khloe. Or should I say, Mrs. Thorne?" Victor smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I must admit, the boardroom looks much better with you in it than Marcus. Tragic business, what happened to him."

"Save the pleasantries, Victor," Khloe said, her voice ice-cold. "You're trespassing on my time. Speak."

Victor’s smirk faltered slightly at her directness, but he quickly recovered. "I’ll get right to it. You’re in over your head, sweetheart. You played a brilliant game of divorce court, I’ll give you that. But running an empire? That takes a killer instinct you don't possess. The shareholders are terrified. They think you're going to bankrupt them."

He reached into his jacket, tossing a single sheet of paper across her desk.

"I’m offering you three billion dollars for your controlling interest in the trust," Victor said, leaning forward. "Take the money, take your baby, and go buy an island somewhere. Leave the real business to the men."

Khloe looked at the paper. Three billion dollars. It was an astronomical sum. Most people would have snatched it and ran.

Khloe picked up the paper, holding it between two fingers. Then, without breaking eye contact with Victor, she calmly tore it directly down the middle.

Victor’s jaw tightened. "Are you insane? That is double the market value of your shares."

"My shares are not for sale," Khloe said, tossing the torn pieces into the trash can beside her desk. "And if you ever walk into my office unannounced again, I won't just have security throw you out. I will initiate a hostile takeover of Sterling Global and fire you from your own company. Do we understand each other?"

Victor stood up, his face flushing with fury. He buttoned his suit jacket, glaring down at her. "You are making a massive mistake, little girl. By the time I'm done with you, you'll be begging me to buy this company for pennies on the dollar."

"Get out of my building, Victor," Khloe commanded.

As Victor stormed out of the office, slamming the doors behind him, Elias let out a low whistle. "Well. You certainly didn't make a friend today."

"I don't need friends," Khloe said, turning her chair back toward the window, looking out at the city she now controlled. "I need an army. And it's time we start recruiting."
