Chapter 12: The Mistress's Last Desperate Play

Isabella Rossi sat in a dingy, dimly lit diner in Queens, nursing a lukewarm cup of black coffee.
Her life had become unrecognizable. The federal immunity deal had kept her out of prison, but it hadn't saved her bank accounts. The government had seized every diamond, every designer handbag, and every penny Marcus had illegally funneled to her.
She was broke, blacklisted from every high-society circle in Manhattan, and currently renting a studio apartment that smelled like boiled cabbage and despair.
But Isabella was a survivor. If she couldn't have Marcus's money, she would find another way to profit off the Thorne name.
Across the sticky Formica table sat a man with greasy hair and a cheap suit. He was a senior editor for The Manhattan Insider, a notorious tabloid known for destroying reputations.
"So," the editor drawled, tapping a pen against his notepad. "You said you had a story worth fifty grand. It better be good, Isabella. You’re yesterday's news."
Isabella leaned in, her eyes burning with vindictive fire. "What if I told you Khloe Thorne didn't steal the company legally? What if I told you she framed Marcus, doctored the security footage from the hospital, and paid off the doctors to fake the severity of her injuries?"
The editor raised an eyebrow. "Can you prove it?"
"I don't need to prove it," Isabella smiled maliciously. "I just need you to print it. Victor Sterling is breathing down her neck. If your paper runs a front-page exposé claiming the CEO of Thorne Industries committed corporate treason and perjury, her stock will plummet. The board will panic. They'll force her to sell to Sterling."
"And what do you get out of this?" the editor asked.
"Revenge," Isabella whispered. "And the fifty thousand dollars. In cash."
The editor grinned, showing crooked teeth. "You’ve got a deal. We go to print on Sunday."
Sunday morning, the news hit the city like a bomb.
THE PREGNANT PREDATOR: DID KHLOE THORNE FAKE AN ASSAULT TO STEAL A BILLION-DOLLAR EMPIRE?
The headline was everywhere. Social media erupted. The Thorne Industries PR department was inundated with calls from panicked investors. By Monday morning, the company’s stock had dropped eight percent.
Khloe stood in her office, watching the news anchors debate her legitimacy on the flat-screen TV. Elias paced nervously behind her.
"We need to issue a denial immediately," Elias urged, scrolling frantically through his tablet. "I can file a defamation lawsuit against the tabloid and Isabella by noon, but the damage is already being done. Sterling is using this panic to push the minority shareholders to vote for a leadership change."
"No," Khloe said, her voice completely steady.
Elias stopped pacing. "No? Khloe, she is destroying your credibility!"
"Let her," Khloe replied, finally turning away from the television. "If we sue, it looks like we’re trying to silence her. It makes us look guilty. Isabella wants a public fight. So, we are going to give her one. But we will fight on my turf."
"What are you planning?" Elias asked, sensing the dangerous shift in her tone.
"Call The Morning Show on NBC," Khloe instructed. "Tell them I am ready to do my first exclusive, sit-down interview since taking over the company. Tell them I will answer every single question about the takeover, the assault, and Isabella Rossi."
Elias hesitated. "Live television is a massive risk. If they blindside you—"
"They won't," Khloe said, a sharp, calculating smile spreading across her lips. "Because I’m not just going on television to defend myself. I'm going on television to set a trap. And Isabella is arrogant enough to walk right into it."
Three days later, Khloe sat under the blinding studio lights of the most watched morning show in America. She looked the picture of elegance and grace, projecting calm confidence.
The host, a veteran journalist known for her tough questions, leaned forward. "Khloe, Isabella Rossi claims you exaggerated the assault and doctored the security footage to steal the company from your husband. How do you respond?"
Khloe looked directly into the camera. She knew Isabella was watching.
"Isabella Rossi is a desperate woman looking for a paycheck," Khloe said softly, yet firmly. "The unedited footage was authenticated by the FBI. But if Isabella truly believes I falsified evidence, I invite her to prove it in a court of law. In fact, I am publicly offering to waive my NDA and my right to counter-sue for defamation, if Isabella agrees to a sworn, live deposition regarding the events of that night."
Khloe paused, delivering the final, devastating blow.
"But we all know she won't. Because liars thrive in tabloids, but they burn under oath."
May you like
In her dingy apartment, Isabella screamed, throwing her coffee mug at the television screen. Khloe had just publicly dared her. If she backed down, the tabloid wouldn't pay her the fifty thousand dollars. But if she lied under oath, she would go to federal prison for perjury.
Khloe hadn't just defended herself; she had trapped Isabella in a checkmate.
