Chapter 14: The Hostile Bid

The Thorne Industries Annual Shareholder Gala was being held at the Waldorf Astoria. The grand ballroom was packed with the most influential investors, board members, and financial analysts in the world.

It was supposed to be a celebration of Khloe’s new leadership. But the atmosphere in the room was tense, thick with anxiety and whispered rumors.

Victor Sterling had not been invited, but that didn't stop him from attending. He stood near the main bar, surrounded by a group of minority shareholders, holding court like a conquering king.

Khloe watched him from the balcony, a glass of sparkling cider in her hand. Elias stood rigidly beside her.

"He’s lobbying them," Elias murmured, glaring down at Sterling. "He’s been working the room all night. He secured proxy votes from three of the major hedge funds this morning. When the board meets for the confidence vote at midnight, Sterling might actually have enough leverage to force a mandate. If he gets 51% of the room to vote no-confidence, the bylaws state you must entertain his buyout offer."

"I’m aware of the bylaws, Elias," Khloe said, her eyes tracking a specific man moving through the crowd downstairs.

Arthur Pendelton. The oldest sitting member on the Thorne board of directors, and previously one of Marcus's closest allies. Arthur was shaking hands with Victor Sterling, offering him a discreet, conspiratorial nod.

"Arthur is the key," Khloe noted quietly. "He controls the largest block of voting shares outside of my trust. Sterling bought him off."

"We suspected Arthur was the leak during the hostile takeover," Elias agreed. "But we have no proof. If he votes with Sterling tonight, you could lose the company, Khloe."

"I’m not losing my son's company," Khloe replied, her voice resolute. "It's time to spring the trap."

Khloe handed her glass to Elias and made her way down the grand staircase, stepping directly into the lion's den. The crowd parted for her, murmurs rippling through the ballroom as the young CEO moved with deadly precision toward the center of the room.

She walked straight up to Victor Sterling and Arthur Pendelton.

"Gentlemen," Khloe smiled warmly. "I hope you’re enjoying the champagne. It’s paid for by my company’s record-breaking third-quarter profits."

Victor chuckled darkly. "Profits that are about to take a dive, my dear. Enjoy the party while it lasts. By midnight, there will be a new regime in charge."

Arthur refused to look Khloe in the eye, shifting uncomfortably. "It’s nothing personal, Khloe. We just feel the company needs experienced, steady hands during this transitionary period."

"Experienced hands?" Khloe raised an eyebrow. "Like yours, Arthur?"

"Exactly," Arthur puffed out his chest.

"That's fascinating," Khloe said, her voice carrying just loud enough for the surrounding investors to pause and listen. "Because my forensic accounting team recently did a deep dive into the European merger that Marcus arranged before his... departure."

Arthur’s face instantly paled.

"We found an anomaly," Khloe continued, stepping closer to Arthur. "A discrepancy of twelve million dollars paid out in 'consulting fees' to a shell corporation in Geneva. A shell corporation registered to your brother-in-law, Arthur."

The surrounding conversation abruptly stopped. Total silence fell over their section of the ballroom. Victor Sterling’s smug smile vanished.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Arthur stammered, sweating profusely. "This is a baseless accusation!"

"Oh, it's very based," Khloe countered, pulling a folded sheet of paper from her clutch and handing it to him. "It’s a copy of the wire transfer authorization, signed by you, Arthur. You helped Marcus embezzle funds, and in return, he gave you a twelve-million-dollar cut."

Arthur looked at the paper, his hands trembling violently.

"Now," Khloe said, turning her icy gaze to Victor Sterling. "I know Victor here offered you a lucrative board seat at Sterling Global if you helped him oust me tonight. But here is my counteroffer, Arthur."

Khloe stepped in so close that only Arthur and Victor could hear her next words.

"When the confidence vote is called at midnight, you will stand up, endorse my leadership, and publicly reject Victor Sterling's buyout offer," Khloe whispered, her tone laced with absolute authority. "Tomorrow morning, you will resign from the board citing health reasons, and you will surrender your shares to the company treasury. If you do this, I won't hand this wire transfer to the FBI."

Arthur was trapped. He looked at Victor, pleading for help, but Victor stepped back, distancing himself from the toxic, sinking ship.

"You have until midnight, Arthur," Khloe smiled, stepping back and speaking at a normal volume. "Enjoy the rest of the gala, gentlemen."
