Chapter 7 – The Man in the Photograph

Chapter 7 – The Man in the Photograph
Daniel had worn a path into the polished hospital floor.
He paced outside the delivery room, stopping only when he heard Emily cry out from behind the closed doors.
Every sound tightened the knot in his chest.
Detective Bennett stepped toward him, her expression unusually tense.

"Daniel."
He turned immediately.
"Is Emily okay?"
"As far as we know, yes. The doctors are focused on the delivery."
He exhaled.
"Then what is it?"
She held up her phone.
"I need you to look at someone."
Daniel glanced at the screen.
His eyes narrowed.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then his face went completely still.
"...No."
"You recognize him?"
He nodded slowly.
"His name isn't Gregory Shaw."
"Who is he?"
"Richard Mercer."
Detective Bennett made a note.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel leaned against the wall, struggling to process what he was seeing.
"Richard worked with my father for years."
"What kind of work?"
"He was our family's financial adviser."
Bennett's eyebrows lifted.
"The same adviser who helped establish your grandfather's estate?"
"Yes."
"He attended every major family meeting after my grandfather passed away."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"My father trusted him completely."
"So did I."
Twenty Years Earlier
Daniel was twelve years old when he first met Richard Mercer.
Richard had arrived at the family home carrying a leather briefcase and wearing the same easy smile he seemed to wear in every photograph.
He remembered Richard kneeling to shake his hand.
"You must be Daniel."
"Yes, sir."
"I've heard great things about you."
From that day forward, Richard became a regular part of family gatherings.
He attended holiday dinners.
Graduation celebrations.
Even Daniel's wedding.
He was never just an adviser.
He became a family friend.
Present Day
"This doesn't make sense," Daniel whispered.
"If Richard wanted money, why involve Vanessa?"
Detective Bennett considered the question.
"Maybe because she had access."
"Or because she trusted him."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She called him Uncle Richard when we were kids."
Bennett looked up sharply.
"So they were close."
"Very."
At the county detention center...
Vanessa sat alone in her cell, replaying Richard's visit over and over.
He had lied.
About everything.
She had believed him when he promised that borrowing the trust money would only be temporary.
She had believed him when he claimed he could replace every dollar before Daniel noticed.
She had believed him when he said no one would ever get hurt.
Now Emily had nearly lost her babies.
Vanessa buried her face in her hands.
For the first time since her arrest...
She cried.
Hours earlier...
She remembered the first conversation that had changed everything.
It had started nearly a year before.
Richard had invited her to lunch.
"You look worried," he had said.
"I've made some bad financial decisions."
"How bad?"
"I owe money."
"To the bank?"
She had shaken her head.
"Worse."
Richard had remained calm.
"I can help."
"How?"
"There are resources your family doesn't even realize they have."
He had spoken with confidence.
With patience.
Never raising his voice.
He convinced her that moving money between accounts was only a temporary solution.
"No one gets hurt," he had promised.
"You'll pay everything back."
She wanted to believe him.
So she did.
Back at the hospital...
The delivery room doors finally opened.
Dr. Harper stepped into the hallway.
Daniel rushed toward her.
"Emily?"
"She's stable."
"And the babies?"
A smile spread across the doctor's face.
"Congratulations."
"You have a son..."
She paused.
"...and a daughter."
Daniel's knees nearly gave out with relief.
"They're okay?"
"They're small, but they're breathing on their own."
Tears filled his eyes.
"Can I see them?"
"In a moment. The NICU team is examining them."
He covered his face with both hands.
For the first time in two days...
He allowed himself to cry.
Detective Bennett quietly stepped away, giving him the moment.
Inside the recovery room...
Emily looked exhausted but peaceful.
A nurse carefully wheeled in two clear bassinets.
Daniel entered behind her.
"You should meet them."
Emily smiled weakly.
The nurse gently lifted the first baby.
"Your son."
Daniel took him carefully, afraid to move too quickly.
The tiny boy stretched one hand toward his father's chest.
Emily laughed softly through her tears.
"He's already stubborn."
The nurse then placed their daughter beside Emily.
She opened sleepy blue eyes for just a moment before drifting back to sleep.
"They're beautiful," Emily whispered.
Daniel leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"You did it."
"We did."
For a few precious minutes...
The investigation.
The attack.
The missing money.
Everything else disappeared.
There was only their family.
Later that evening...
Detective Bennett received a call from Agent Ellis.
"We found Richard."
She immediately stood.
"Where?"
"He owns a cabin three hours north."
"Get a warrant."
"We already have one."
"Has anyone seen him?"
"No."
"But someone used his credit card this afternoon."
"When?"
"Forty minutes ago."
Bennett looked toward the hospital room where Daniel and Emily sat with their newborn twins.
"If he's running..."
"He won't get far."
Ellis hesitated.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"The credit card purchase."
"What did he buy?"
"A one-way ferry ticket."
Bennett's expression hardened.
"He isn't hiding."
She grabbed her car keys.
"He's leaving the country."
As she hurried toward the elevator, another message appeared on her phone.
Airport surveillance update: Subject changed vehicles. Current destination unknown.

Richard Mercer had vanished.
And the hunt had only just begun.
