Chapter 10 – An Unfinished Investigation

Chapter 10 – An Unfinished Investigation

Daniel couldn't stop staring at the old newspaper clipping.

The faded ink and yellowed paper made it feel like a relic from another lifetime, but the questions it raised were painfully current.

He looked at his mother.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this before?"

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"Because I couldn't prove anything."

"But you suspected Richard."

"I did."

"Enough to keep that article for twenty-five years."

She nodded.

"I always believed your father died before he could expose something."

Emily reached for Daniel's hand.

"You were only a teenager."

He squeezed her fingers gently.

"I know."

Margaret's voice softened.

"I wanted you to have a normal life. After your father died, you had already lost enough."

Daniel wanted to be angry.

Instead, he saw the guilt his mother had carried for decades.

Later that afternoon, Detective Bennett and Agent Ellis met with the county prosecutor.

The conference room walls were covered with photographs, financial charts, and timelines.

Richard Mercer's picture sat in the center.

Ellis pointed to the board.

"We have evidence of identity theft, fraud, forgery, and conspiracy."

The prosecutor nodded.

"But no arrest."

"Not yet."

"What about Vanessa?"

"She connects Richard to the financial records."

"But she hasn't fully cooperated."

The prosecutor folded his arms.

"If she decides to testify, our case becomes much stronger."

Bennett agreed.

"We're working on it."

Across town...

Vanessa sat quietly in an interview room.

She looked exhausted.

Her attorney placed a legal pad in front of her.

"The prosecutor is willing to discuss a cooperation agreement."

Vanessa didn't respond.

Linda Mercer leaned forward.

"You need to understand your position."

"I do."

"Do you?"

"If Richard disappears forever, you'll carry the blame alone."

Vanessa slowly looked up.

"He promised he would protect me."

"And instead?"

"He left."

Linda nodded.

"Then stop protecting him."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, they were filled with tears.

"I'll tell them what I know."

That evening, Detective Bennett entered the interview room.

A digital recorder sat on the table.

She pressed the record button.

"For the record, please state your name."

"Vanessa Carter."

"Do you understand that you're speaking voluntarily?"

"Yes."

Bennett nodded.

"Let's begin."

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"Richard approached me almost a year ago."

"What did he want?"

"He asked questions about Daniel."

"What kind of questions?"

"His passwords."

"His schedule."

"Where he kept important documents."

Bennett wrote quickly.

"Did you tell him?"

"At first... no."

"What changed?"

"My debts."

She looked down at her hands.

"I was desperate."

"Did Richard know that?"

"I never told him."

"So how did he find out?"

Vanessa gave a humorless laugh.

"He already knew."

"You think he was watching you?"

"I think he watched everyone."

Meanwhile...

The forensic accounting team made another breakthrough.

Agent Ellis hurried into Bennett's office carrying a stack of printed reports.

"We've traced another transfer."

"How much?"

"Seventy-five thousand dollars."

"Where did it go?"

"A private investment account."

"Owned by Richard?"

"No."

Ellis looked puzzled.

"That's the strange part."

"The account belonged to Daniel's father."

Bennett frowned.

"That's impossible."

"He died twenty years ago."

"I know."

She took the report and read it twice.

"The account should've been closed years ago."

"It wasn't."

Someone had kept it active.

The following morning...

Daniel and Emily were finally allowed to spend several uninterrupted hours with their twins.

Their son wrapped his tiny fingers around Daniel's thumb.

Their daughter slept peacefully against Emily's chest.

For a little while, nothing else mattered.

The hospital room felt almost normal.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

It was Agent Ellis.

"I need you to come downtown."

Daniel's smile faded.

"Did you find Richard?"

"No."

"What happened?"

"We found something in your father's financial records."

Daniel looked at Emily.

"I'll be back as soon as I can."

She nodded.

"Be careful."

An hour later...

Daniel arrived at the Financial Crimes Task Force office.

Agent Ellis led him into a secure conference room.

Several documents lay neatly arranged across the table.

"What am I looking at?"

Ellis pointed to the oldest file.

"This is your father's investment account."

Daniel recognized the account number immediately.

"He used this for retirement savings."

"Correct."

Ellis slid another document beside it.

"This statement was issued six months ago."

Daniel frowned.

"That can't be right."

"Why not?"

"My father has been dead for twenty years."

"Exactly."

Ellis handed him a magnifying glass.

"Look at the authorized user."

Daniel read the signature line.

His heart nearly stopped.

The account listed only one authorized representative.

Richard Mercer.

Daniel looked up slowly.

"How?"

"We're still trying to answer that."

Ellis opened one final folder.

"There was also a safety deposit box connected to the account."

Daniel blinked.

"I never knew about that."

"Neither did anyone else."

"Was it opened?"

Ellis nodded.

"Yesterday."

"By who?"

He placed a surveillance photograph on the table.

The timestamp showed less than forty-eight hours earlier.

Richard Mercer stood inside the bank lobby, wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.

He was carrying a small metal lockbox as he walked out the front door.

Daniel felt a wave of frustration.

"We missed him."

"By less than an hour," Ellis replied.

"What was inside the box?"

"We don't know."

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Whatever Richard had hidden for twenty years...

May you like

He had finally come back to retrieve it.

And investigators were now certain it was important enough for him to risk exposing himself.
