Chapter 16 – Across the Water

Chapter 16 – Across the Water

The surveillance image was grainy, but the resemblance was unmistakable.

Richard Mercer stood on the dock with one hand on the arm of an elderly man wearing a dark overcoat and a flat cap. The man's posture was stooped, but his face closely matched the younger version of James Mercer in the photograph from the archive room.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"You're telling me James Mercer is alive?"

"We can't confirm it yet," Detective Bennett replied. "Facial recognition suggests a high probability, but we'll need positive identification."

Agent Ellis enlarged the image.

"The marina's security cameras caught them boarding a private fishing vessel at 8:12 this morning."

"Did the boat leave?" Daniel asked.

"Yes."

"Where was it headed?"

"We're still tracking it."

Within an hour, investigators had gathered in the task force command center.

A map of Lake Superior filled the largest monitor.

Red markers identified marinas, private docks, and nearby islands.

"The boat belongs to a charter company," Ellis explained. "It was rented under another false identity."

"Can we contact the captain?" Bennett asked.

"We already did."

"And?"

"He says he thought he was taking a grandfather and grandson to a remote cabin."

Daniel let out a slow breath.

"Richard planned another disguise."

Ellis nodded.

"But he overlooked one detail."

"What?"

"The captain's onboard GPS."

Using the boat's tracking system, the Coast Guard traced its route.

The vessel had stopped briefly at a small island before continuing toward the Canadian shoreline.

A rescue helicopter was placed on standby while local authorities coordinated with federal agents.

Bennett turned to Daniel.

"You should stay here."

Daniel shook his head.

"I've come too far."

"This could be dangerous."

"So was walking into my house and finding my wife on the floor."

Bennett held his gaze for a moment before nodding.

"You'll remain with the command team."

Back at St. Matthew's Medical Center...

Emily was finally well enough to walk to the NICU without assistance.

She stood beside her twins, smiling as the nurse weighed them.

"Our little girl gained three ounces," the nurse said.

"And your son gained four."

Emily laughed softly.

"They're already competing."

Margaret Carter walked into the nursery carrying fresh flowers.

"Any news?"

Emily hesitated.

"They think they found Richard."

Margaret's smile faded.

"I prayed this day would come."

"So did I."

Emily looked through the glass at her sleeping children.

"I just hope it ends without anyone else getting hurt."

Several hundred miles away...

The charter boat drifted toward a rocky shoreline.

Richard secured the ropes while the elderly man remained seated.

"You should rest," Richard said.

The old man smiled faintly.

"You've always worried too much."

Richard looked toward the water.

"They're getting closer."

"I know."

"You don't sound surprised."

"I've spent thirty years expecting this day."

Richard lowered his head.

"I tried to protect you."

"No."

The old man looked directly at him.

"You tried to protect the family name."

Richard didn't answer.

After a long silence, the older man spoke again.

"You know this can't continue."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

At the command center, a Coast Guard officer hurried into the room.

"We've located the vessel."

Bennett stood immediately.

"Where?"

"It reached the island thirty minutes ago."

"Any movement?"

The officer projected live aerial images onto the screen.

A weathered cabin stood near the shoreline.

The boat remained tied to the dock.

No one was outside.

Ellis studied the thermal imaging feed.

"I have two heat signatures."

"Inside?"

"Yes."

Bennett reached for her radio.

"The tactical team will move in."

The operation began just before sunset.

Federal agents surrounded the cabin while a Coast Guard crew secured the shoreline.

"Federal agents!" an officer called through a loudspeaker.

"Come out with your hands visible!"

No response.

The command was repeated.

Still nothing.

Finally, the entry team forced open the front door.

The cabin was silent.

Two cups of tea rested on the table.

A fireplace crackled softly.

One bedroom was empty.

The second contained the elderly man from the surveillance image.

He sat calmly in a wooden chair.

His hands rested on a cane.

"I've been expecting you," he said.

An agent looked around the room.

"Where's Richard Mercer?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"He's gone."

Minutes later, Detective Bennett entered the cabin.

"Sir, I'm Detective Laura Bennett."

"I know who you are."

"Can you identify yourself?"

The man nodded.

"My name is James Mercer."

Daniel, who had been brought to the island after the cabin was secured, stepped into the doorway.

James looked at him for a long moment.

"You have your grandfather's eyes."

Daniel's voice was steady.

"Where is Richard?"

James closed his eyes.

"He left before you arrived."

"Where did he go?"

"I won't lie to you."

He opened his eyes again.

"I don't know."

"You helped him escape."

"No."

James shook his head.

"I told him to stop running."

Bennett pulled out a chair and sat across from him.

"Then help us understand."

James looked toward the fading light outside the window.

"For years, Richard believed he was protecting me."

"From what?" Daniel asked.

James slowly reached into the pocket of his coat.

Several agents tensed.

He carefully removed a folded photograph instead.

It showed three people standing together decades earlier.

William Carter.

James Mercer.

And a woman neither Daniel nor Bennett recognized.

James placed the photograph on the table.

"Before you ask another question..."

He took a deep breath.

"...there's something you deserve to know."

He pointed to the woman in the picture.

"This is Eleanor Carter."

Daniel frowned.

"My grandfather's sister?"

James nodded.

"Yes."

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

"She wasn't just William's sister."

A long silence filled the cabin.

James's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"She was my wife."

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

"What?"

James nodded.

"Our marriage was kept secret because both families believed it would destroy their business partnership."

He looked down at the old photograph.

"Every lie that followed..."

He paused.

"...began with that one."

Outside, the wind rattled the cabin windows.

Inside, Daniel realized the investigation had uncovered something even larger than financial fraud.

It had uncovered a family secret buried for generations.
