Chapter 17 – The Truth James Carried

Chapter 17 – The Truth James Carried

The cabin fell silent.

Daniel stared at the faded photograph lying on the table.

His grandfather, William Carter.

A young James Mercer.

And Eleanor Carter.

A woman Daniel had known only through a handful of family photographs.

"My grandfather never mentioned that Eleanor was married," Daniel said.

James gave a weary smile.

"He couldn't."

"Why not?"

"Because almost no one knew."

Detective Bennett opened her notebook.

"Start from the beginning."

James nodded.

"You deserve the whole truth."

"It was 1968," James began.

"Eleanor and I met while I was working as a junior accountant for Carter Industries."

"We fell in love."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Did William approve?"

"He did."

"And your families?"

James let out a quiet laugh.

"They cared more about business than happiness."

He explained that the Carter family and the Whitmore family were negotiating a merger that would transform both companies.

A marriage between Eleanor and an employee was considered a scandal that could threaten the deal.

"So we kept it secret," James said.

"For how long?" Bennett asked.

"Almost two years."

"Were you legally married?"

"Yes."

James reached into an old leather wallet and removed a worn marriage certificate.

Detective Bennett examined it carefully.

The county seal was authentic.

The signatures had aged naturally.

"This appears genuine," she said.

"It is."

Daniel struggled to process everything.

"If the marriage was legal, why erase it from the family records?"

James looked down.

"Because Eleanor became pregnant."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"What happened?"

"The board of directors found out."

"And?"

"They demanded an annulment."

"You refused."

"We both did."

James closed his eyes for a moment.

"Eleanor said our child deserved the truth."

"What child?" Daniel asked quietly.

James's voice trembled.

"A son."

The room grew still.

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard about another child in our family."

"You weren't supposed to."

James explained that before the baby was born, Eleanor left town under another name.

Only William Carter knew where she had gone.

"He promised he would protect us," James said.

"For a while, he did."

"What changed?" Bennett asked.

"Money."

James looked toward the window.

"When the company expanded, people began fighting over control."

"The missing funds?"

James nodded.

"They started appearing around the same time."

Agent Ellis entered the cabin carrying a folder.

"We've confirmed the marriage certificate."

Bennett looked up.

"So it was real."

"Yes."

"And there's something else."

He handed her another document.

"A birth record."

James closed his eyes.

"I wondered if it still existed."

Bennett read the certificate carefully.

The child had been born under a different surname.

His first name was...

Andrew.

Daniel looked at James.

"What happened to him?"

James swallowed.

"I lost him."

"What do you mean?"

"Eleanor died from complications a few weeks after the birth."

Daniel's heart sank.

"I'm so sorry."

James nodded gratefully.

"After the funeral, someone took Andrew."

"Took him?"

"They told me he had been placed with another family."

"Did you ever find him?"

"I searched for years."

"But every record disappeared."

Detective Bennett exchanged a glance with Agent Ellis.

"If someone erased the marriage..."

"They could erase the adoption too," Ellis finished.

James nodded.

"Exactly."

Just then, Bennett's phone rang.

She stepped outside the cabin to answer.

Agent Ellis followed a moment later.

"What happened?" he asked.

She lowered the phone slowly.

"The DNA lab called."

"The samples from the archive?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"They compared them with James."

Ellis waited.

"They found a match."

"To who?"

Bennett looked stunned.

"Richard Mercer."

Ellis blinked.

"We already knew they were related."

"No."

She handed him the report.

"This isn't a father-and-son match."

Ellis read the results twice.

Then a third time.

"That can't be right."

"It was verified."

He looked back toward the cabin.

"What does it say?"

Bennett answered quietly.

"It says James Mercer is Richard's grandfather."

Inside the cabin, Daniel continued speaking with James.

"So Richard wasn't your son."

"No."

"Then whose son was he?"

James sighed.

"My son Andrew grew up under another name."

"You found him?"

"I did."

"But not until he was an adult."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What name?"

James hesitated.

"I promised him I would never reveal it."

"James..."

"I know."

Tears gathered in the old man's eyes.

"I've kept too many secrets already."

He slowly looked up.

"My son became..."

Before he could finish, a gunshot shattered the cabin's front window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Agents immediately pulled Daniel and James to the floor.

"Everyone down!" someone shouted.

A second shot struck the wooden wall above the fireplace.

Detective Bennett rushed back inside with her service weapon drawn.

"Where did it come from?"

An agent looked toward the tree line.

"North ridge!"

Outside, officers spread through the forest.

The shooter disappeared into the dense pines before anyone could identify him.

Minutes later, the scene was secured.

James was shaken but unharmed.

Daniel helped him back into his chair.

"Are you okay?"

James nodded weakly.

"They're running out of time."

Daniel frowned.

"Who is?"

James looked directly into his eyes.

"The people who don't want Andrew's name spoken."

The room fell silent.

May you like

Whoever had fired those shots wasn't trying to rob anyone.

They had been trying to silence the last man who knew the truth.
