Chapter 18 – The Name No One Could Speak

Chapter 18 – The Name No One Could Speak
The echo of the gunshots faded into the surrounding forest.
Federal agents swept the tree line while a medical team checked James Mercer for injuries. Aside from a few small cuts from the shattered glass, he was unharmed.
Detective Bennett returned inside the cabin.
"The shooter got away."
James gave a tired nod.
"I expected as much."
Daniel looked at him.

"You knew someone would try to stop you?"
"For years."
"Then why agree to meet us?"
James smiled sadly.
"Because I'm ninety-one years old."
He folded his hands around his cane.
"I'd rather tell the truth than die protecting a lie."
An hour later, the cabin had been converted into a temporary command post.
Agent Ellis placed additional officers around the property while forensic technicians documented the scene.
One technician approached Bennett carrying a small evidence bag.
"We recovered the bullet."
"Anything useful?"
"It came from a hunting rifle."
"Fingerprints?"
"None."
"What about the shell casing?"
The technician shook his head.
"The shooter took it."
"A professional."
"That's our opinion."
Inside the cabin, James stared quietly at the old family photograph.
Daniel sat across from him.
"You were about to tell me about Andrew."
James nodded.
"I owe you that much."
He took a slow breath.
"When Andrew turned twenty-five, he found me."
Daniel frowned.
"He found you?"
"Completely by accident."
"How?"
"He discovered adoption papers hidden in his father's desk after his adoptive parents passed away."
"So he searched for you."
"Yes."
James smiled faintly.
"He wanted answers."
"Did you tell him everything?"
"I told him as much as I knew."
"And then?"
"He asked me one question."
"What was it?"
James looked directly at Daniel.
"Am I still a Carter?"
Daniel felt a lump form in his throat.
"What did you tell him?"
"I told him blood doesn't make a family."
Detective Bennett quietly joined them.
"Did Andrew believe you?"
James chuckled softly.
"He said he already knew."
"He loved the parents who raised him."
"But he still wanted to know where he came from."
Daniel nodded.
"I understand that."
James reached into his coat pocket.
"I've carried this for years."
He removed a folded letter.
"The last letter Andrew ever sent me."
Daniel accepted it carefully.
The paper had become fragile with age.
Inside, Andrew had written:
I'm not looking for money or a family name. I only wanted to know who my mother was. Now that I know, I can finally live without wondering.
Daniel folded the letter carefully.
"What happened to him?"
James looked away.
"He died."
"I'm sorry."
"It was cancer."
The room fell quiet.
"Did he have children?" Bennett asked gently.
James nodded.
"One."
Daniel's heart skipped a beat.
"A son?"
"Yes."
"Richard?"
James slowly shook his head.
"No."
Silence settled over the room.
Daniel frowned.
"Then who?"
James hesitated.
"I don't know."
"You don't know your own grandson?"
"I met him only once."
"Why?"
"Andrew wanted to protect him from all of this."
He looked around the cabin.
"I suppose he was right."
Outside...
Agent Ellis received an urgent call from the DNA laboratory.
He answered immediately.
"Ellis."
The scientist sounded excited.
"We've completed another comparison."
"Between whom?"
"James Mercer."
"And?"
"The unknown fingerprints recovered from the storage unit."
Ellis stopped walking.
"What did you find?"
"They're related."
"Richard?"
"No."
"The unidentified prints belong to a close biological relative of James Mercer."
Ellis frowned.
"How close?"
The answer made him stop in his tracks.
"Approximately fifty percent shared DNA."
Ellis stared across the lake.
"That would make them..."
"A child."
He hurried back into the cabin.
"Bennett."
She looked up.
"What happened?"
Ellis held up the lab report.
"The unidentified fingerprints don't belong to Richard."
James slowly stood with the help of his cane.
"Whose are they?"
Ellis looked at him.
"They belong to your child."
James stared at him in confusion.
"My son Andrew died."
"We confirmed that."
"Then..."
Ellis placed the report on the table.
"The DNA indicates you have another biological child."
The room went completely silent.
James slowly lowered himself back into his chair.
"That's impossible."
"Not according to the lab."
James closed his eyes.
"There was never..."
His voice faded.
Then his expression changed.
A memory surfaced.
"Eleanor..."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What is it?"
"When she was hospitalized before Andrew was born..."
James whispered.
"The doctors thought she was carrying twins."
No one moved.
James looked up, stunned by the realization.
"They told us one heartbeat had disappeared."
He covered his face with trembling hands.
"What if it never did?"
Detective Bennett immediately turned to Agent Ellis.
"Check every hospital record from that year."
"We already started."
"What about birth certificates?"
"We'll request sealed adoption files."
Daniel struggled to process what he had just heard.
"If there really were twins..."
Ellis finished the thought.
"One child stayed with James."
"And the other..."
Bennett looked toward the family photograph.
"...may have been taken before anyone realized the truth."
Just then, Daniel's phone rang.
It was Emily.
He answered immediately.
"Hey."
Her voice sounded calm, but concerned.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Did you find Richard?"
"Not yet."
He hesitated.
"But we found something else."
Emily smiled softly.
"I had a feeling."
"What do you mean?"
She looked through the NICU window at their newborn twins sleeping side by side.
"Families have a way of hiding secrets."
Daniel looked toward James.
"You're right."
Emily paused.
"Come home soon."
"I will."
After the call ended, Agent Ellis received another message.
He opened it and looked up at Bennett.
"The hospital finally sent the original maternity records."
"From Andrew's birth?"
"Yes."
He swallowed.
"There were two infants admitted that night."
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"What happened to the second baby?"
Ellis slowly shook his head.
"That's the problem."
He looked directly at Daniel.
"The records for the second infant end twelve hours after birth."
May you like
"And after that..."
"They simply disappear."
