Chapter 19 – The Missing Child

Chapter 19 – The Missing Child

The room remained silent as Agent Ellis placed the faded hospital records on the table.

Every page had been preserved on fragile microfilm before being digitized decades later.

Detective Bennett carefully turned to the final entry.

It ended abruptly.

Infant B — Transferred

There was no destination.

No physician's signature.

No discharge record.

No adoption paperwork.

Nothing.

"It just... stops," Daniel said.

Ellis nodded.

"Almost as if someone removed the rest of the file."

James Mercer stared at the document with trembling hands.

"For fifty-eight years..."

He whispered.

"I believed there had only been one child."

Back at the task force headquarters, a team of investigators began reviewing thousands of archived county records.

Boxes of old hospital documents surrounded them.

Hours passed.

Nothing.

Then a records specialist called out.

"I found something."

Everyone looked up.

She held a single index card.

"It was filed separately."

"What's on it?" Bennett asked.

The specialist adjusted her glasses.

"It references Infant B."

"And?"

"The child wasn't transferred to another hospital."

"Where did the record say?"

She looked puzzled.

"It says the infant was released under a court order."

Daniel frowned.

"A court order?"

"Signed by a judge."

Ellis reached for the card.

The signature at the bottom was barely legible.

He enlarged the scanned image.

His expression changed.

"No..."

"What?" Bennett asked.

"The judge."

He turned the screen toward her.

The signature read:

Harold Mercer.

Richard Mercer's father.

James slowly closed his eyes.

"So it began even earlier than I feared."

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew Harold?"

"Only by reputation."

"What kind of reputation?"

James answered quietly.

"He believed powerful families should stay powerful."

"And children?"

"They were bargaining chips."

Later that afternoon...

A federal judge approved emergency access to sealed adoption files connected to the case.

The archives were delivered under police escort.

One folder immediately stood out.

Its cover carried no child's name.

Only a handwritten number.

Case 1147.

Ellis carefully opened it.

Inside lay a single adoption decree.

The names of the adoptive parents had been blacked out years earlier.

But one page had escaped the redaction process.

Bennett read it aloud.

"The child shall receive the surname Mercer."

Daniel's heart pounded.

"So the missing twin..."

Ellis nodded slowly.

"...was raised as a Mercer."

James covered his face.

"I had another son..."

His voice broke.

"And I never knew."

Daniel placed a hand on the old man's shoulder.

"This wasn't your fault."

James shook his head.

"I should have fought harder."

"You didn't know."

"I stopped looking."

"No," Daniel said gently.

"They made sure there was nothing left to find."

At that moment, another call came from the forensic lab.

Agent Ellis answered.

"Ellis."

The analyst spoke quickly.

"We completed the DNA comparison."

"Between who?"

"James Mercer."

"And?"

"The unidentified fingerprints."

Ellis waited.

"They belong to a direct descendant of the missing twin."

"So..."

"The person who left fingerprints in the storage unit is James Mercer's grandchild."

Daniel looked toward Bennett.

"Richard wasn't working alone."

"No."

"He had family."

Meanwhile...

Richard Mercer drove along an isolated highway.

The old pickup truck rattled over the uneven pavement.

He looked exhausted.

His phone had been destroyed days earlier.

Every roadblock forced another detour.

He finally pulled into an abandoned gas station.

Inside the office, a dusty landline still worked.

He dialed a number from memory.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

Richard spoke quietly.

"It's over."

A calm voice replied.

"No."

"They found James."

"I know."

"They have the journals."

"I know."

Richard closed his eyes.

"They're going to find you next."

The voice remained steady.

"Only if you tell them."

Richard looked through the cracked window at the empty highway.

"I've spent my whole life protecting this family."

The voice answered coldly.

"You've been protecting yourself."

The line went dead.

Richard slowly lowered the receiver.

For the first time...

He realized he had become as disposable as Vanessa.

That evening...

Daniel returned to the hospital.

Emily was sitting beside the twins, reading softly from a children's book.

She smiled when she saw him.

"You look exhausted."

"I feel exhausted."

He kissed both babies before sitting beside her.

"So..."

She closed the book.

"What happened today?"

Daniel told her everything.

James.

The second child.

The adoption.

Judge Harold Mercer.

Emily listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked at their sleeping twins.

"Families aren't built by secrets."

Daniel nodded.

"They're built by choices."

Emily gently squeezed his hand.

"Then let's make sure our children never inherit ours."

Daniel smiled for the first time in days.

"I promise."

Just before midnight...

Detective Bennett received an encrypted message from an international liaison officer.

The subject line read:

URGENT IDENTIFICATION

She opened the attached file.

It contained a passport application submitted less than six hours earlier at a small consulate near the Canadian border.

The applicant's photograph showed Richard Mercer.

But that wasn't what caught her attention.

Under Emergency Contact, one name appeared.

Andrew Mercer Jr.

Bennett frowned.

According to every official record...

Andrew had died without surviving children.

Yet someone was using that name.

She immediately called Agent Ellis.

"I think we found the missing grandson."

Ellis answered quietly.

"Or someone pretending to be him."

May you like

Either way...

The final piece of the puzzle had just surfaced.
