Chapter 3 – The Recording Never Lied

Chapter 3 – The Recording Never Lied

The wail of approaching sirens filled the neighborhood.

I had never been so relieved to hear that sound.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside me again, gently brushing damp strands of hair away from my face.

"Stay with me," he whispered.

"I'm trying."

Another contraction seized my body.

I cried out, gripping his hand so tightly my knuckles turned white.

"They're coming too soon."

"I know."

His voice cracked.

"But you're going to be okay."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and spoke rapidly to the 911 dispatcher.

"My wife is thirty-four weeks pregnant with twins. She was assaulted. Her water broke. She's having contractions every couple of minutes."

The dispatcher instructed him to keep me as still as possible until the paramedics arrived.

Daniel never let go of my hand.

Across the room, Vanessa stood frozen.

She looked toward the front door, then toward the back of the house, calculating every possible escape.

Daniel noticed.

"If you leave," he said without looking at her, "I'll tell the police exactly what happened."

"I didn't do anything."

His eyes finally met hers.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"You walked in after she attacked me."

He glanced at my swollen cheek, the scratches on my arms, the broken furniture, and the puddle beneath me.

"Does this look like she attacked you?"

Vanessa opened her mouth but couldn't answer.

The front door burst open.

Two paramedics hurried inside with medical equipment while two police officers followed close behind.

One paramedic immediately knelt beside me.

"I'm Chris," he said calmly. "Can you tell me your name?"

"Emily."

"How far along are you?"

"Thirty-four weeks."

"With twins?"

I nodded.

He exchanged a quick look with his partner.

"Let's get her vitals."

While they examined me, one of the officers approached Daniel.

"Sir, can you explain what happened?"

"I came home early from my trip and found my wife on the floor."

He pointed toward Vanessa.

"My sister was standing over her."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"That's not true."

The second officer turned toward her.

"Ma'am, we'll hear your statement in a moment."

Chris carefully examined my abdomen.

"Emily, are you feeling both babies move?"

I held my breath.

A few terrifying seconds passed.

Then...

A tiny kick.

Followed by another.

Tears filled my eyes.

"Yes."

"They're moving."

"That's good," Chris said reassuringly. "But we need to get you to the hospital immediately."

His partner prepared the stretcher.

As they carefully lifted me, another contraction hit.

I screamed.

Daniel climbed into the ambulance beside me.

Before the doors closed, he looked back at the officers.

"Don't let her leave."

"We won't."

The ambulance sped away with its lights flashing.

At St. Matthew's Medical Center, a team of doctors and nurses rushed me directly into Labor and Delivery.

Ultrasound monitors surrounded the bed.

A physician introduced herself as Dr. Harper.

"We're going to check both babies right now."

The room fell silent except for the sound of medical equipment.

Everyone stared at the monitor.

Then—

A heartbeat.

Strong.

A second heartbeat followed almost immediately.

Equally strong.

I burst into tears.

Daniel leaned forward and kissed my forehead.

"They're alive."

Dr. Harper smiled gently.

"They're under stress, but both babies are responding well."

"Will they have to be delivered today?" Daniel asked.

"It's possible," she answered honestly. "Our priority is keeping both mother and babies safe."

A nurse started an IV while another administered medication to slow the contractions.

For the first time since the attack, I felt like we had a chance.

Several hours later...

The contractions had eased.

The twins remained stable.

Dr. Harper entered my room carrying a clipboard.

"We've managed to delay labor for now."

"How long?"

"We don't know."

She smiled kindly.

"One day at a time."

After she left, the room became quiet.

Daniel sat beside the bed, staring at his phone.

He hadn't spoken much since the ambulance ride.

"What are you thinking?" I asked softly.

He looked up.

"The security footage."

"The backup?"

"It uploads automatically to my secure business server."

"Can you access it?"

He nodded.

"I already did."

He turned the phone toward me.

The video had no sound, but it didn't need any.

There was Vanessa entering the house.

No baby blankets.

Only the leather folder.

The footage clearly showed me stepping backward.

It showed her shoving me.

Grabbing my wrist.

Taking my phone.

Dragging me by my hair.

Then...

The punch.

Daniel stopped the video before it reached the moment I collapsed.

"I can't watch the rest."

Neither could I.

A knock interrupted us.

Detective Laura Bennett stepped into the room carrying a notebook.

"I'm sorry to bother you," she said gently. "Would now be a good time to ask a few questions?"

Daniel nodded.

The detective pulled up a chair.

"We've already viewed the security recording your husband provided."

She paused.

"It confirms the assault."

I closed my eyes.

At least there would be no argument about what had happened.

"However," Detective Bennett continued, "the video raised another question."

Daniel looked up.

"What question?"

"The folder your sister brought."

He frowned.

"What about it?"

"She left it behind."

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"I forgot about that."

"The officers collected it as evidence."

The detective opened her case file and removed several photographs.

The first showed the trust transfer documents.

The second showed handwritten notes.

The third made Daniel's face go pale.

"What is it?" I asked.

He stared silently.

Finally, he whispered,

"That's my signature."

I looked closer.

It certainly appeared to be his.

"But... you never signed those papers."

"I didn't."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"Our forensic examiner agrees."

Daniel slowly looked up.

"It's forged."

"I'm afraid so."

Silence filled the hospital room.

The detective placed one final photograph on the bed.

"This page concerns us even more."

It was a printed bank statement.

Near the bottom was the name of a company neither Daniel nor I recognized.

Beneath it...

A transfer request.

The amount listed was exactly $150,000.

Detective Bennett folded her hands.

"Mr. Carter..."

She looked directly at Daniel.

"I don't believe your sister came here only to steal your children's trust."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"What do you mean?"

The detective answered quietly.

May you like

"I think someone has already taken the money."

The room went completely silent.
