Chapter 11 – The Safety Deposit Box

Chapter 11 – The Safety Deposit Box
Daniel couldn't take his eyes off the surveillance photograph.
Richard Mercer was leaving the bank with a small metal lockbox tucked beneath his arm.
The timestamp read 9:14 a.m.
Less than forty-eight hours earlier.
"So he knew we were getting close," Daniel said quietly.
Agent Ellis nodded.

"That's our conclusion."
"He emptied the safety deposit box before we even knew it existed."
"Exactly."
Detective Bennett stepped into the conference room carrying another file.
"We've spoken with the bank manager."
Daniel looked up.
"Did Richard say anything?"
"He claimed he was collecting personal documents on behalf of your late father's estate."
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"And they believed him?"
"He had identification."
"Fake?"
"No."
Bennett paused.
"It appears to have been legitimate."
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
"Normally, yes."
She placed a notarized power of attorney on the table.
"But according to the bank's records, Richard was granted legal authority by your father twenty-two years ago."
Daniel studied the document.
His father's signature looked authentic.
But after everything they had uncovered, he wasn't sure what to believe anymore.
Back at St. Matthew's Medical Center...
Emily sat quietly in the NICU, gently resting her hand on her daughter's tiny blanket.
The baby stirred, stretching one miniature hand toward her mother's finger.
A nurse smiled.
"She likes knowing you're here."
Emily smiled back.
"So does her brother."
Their son yawned dramatically before falling asleep again.
For a few precious moments, the investigation disappeared from her mind.
She was simply a mother admiring her children.
Then her phone vibrated.
It was a message from Daniel.
Meeting with investigators. I'll explain everything when I get back. I love you.
Emily smiled softly.
We love you too.
Meanwhile...
Vanessa sat alone in the county jail library.
Her attorney had arranged access to old financial records she'd requested.
She flipped through newspaper archives until one headline caught her attention.
LOCAL INVESTOR DIES IN HIGHWAY CRASH
The article was dated twenty years earlier.
It described Daniel's father's fatal accident.
Vanessa read every word carefully.
Near the end of the article was a sentence she'd never noticed before.
Authorities reported that another vehicle may have been traveling near the victim shortly before the crash, but investigators were unable to identify it.
Her hands began to tremble.
She remembered something.
A conversation.
Years ago.
Richard had once laughed while telling a story.
"You'd be amazed how often people ignore an old pickup truck."
At the time, she hadn't understood what he meant.
Now...
She wasn't so sure it had been a joke.
At the Financial Crimes Task Force...
A forensic specialist entered the conference room carrying a tablet.
"We've recovered deleted files from Richard's hard drive."
Agent Ellis looked up.
"Anything useful?"
"Very."
The technician connected the tablet to a large monitor.
A spreadsheet appeared.
It listed dozens of names.
Each beside a dollar amount.
Most of the names meant nothing to Daniel.
Then he froze.
"There."
Ellis looked where Daniel was pointing.
The final entry read:
Carter Estate – Final Phase
Beside it was a date.
July 18
Tomorrow.
Daniel frowned.
"What happens tomorrow?"
The technician scrolled farther down.
One note appeared beneath the spreadsheet.
Retrieve documents. Close accounts. Leave country.
The room fell silent.
"He already had an escape plan," Bennett said.
Ellis checked his watch.
"If that date is accurate..."
Daniel finished the sentence.
"...we have less than twenty-four hours."
An emergency task force meeting was called immediately.
Maps covered the conference table.
Airports.
Border crossings.
Private marinas.
Ellis addressed the room.
"We believe Richard intends to leave the United States."
One detective raised a hand.
"What about private flights?"
"We're checking every filed flight plan."
"Boats?"
"The Coast Guard has been notified."
Bennett pointed to another map.
"What about the Canadian border?"
"We've alerted Customs and Border Protection."
Daniel watched quietly.
"So many people..."
Ellis nodded.
"One man has tied up agencies across three states."
Late that afternoon...
Daniel returned to the hospital.
Emily immediately noticed the exhaustion in his face.
"You found something."
He sat beside her.
"We know Richard had a safety deposit box."
"What was inside?"
"We don't know."
"He emptied it."
Emily sighed.
"So we're still chasing him."
"For now."
She looked toward the NICU window.
"I just want this to end."
"So do I."
He gently took her hand.
"No more secrets."
"No more lies."
Before either of them could speak again, Detective Bennett called Daniel's phone.
He answered immediately.
"Bennett?"
"We've got a lead."
"Where?"
"A state trooper found Richard's rental car."
Daniel stood.
"Is he there?"
"No."
"Then what did you find?"
Bennett took a slow breath.
"The lockbox."
Daniel's heart pounded.
"Was it empty?"
"No."
She paused.
"It contained documents."
"What kind?"
"The original trust records."
Daniel frowned.
"But we already have copies."
"These aren't copies."
Silence.
"They're your grandfather's handwritten journals."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"My grandfather kept journals?"
"For over thirty years."
Bennett's voice grew even quieter.
"And based on the first few pages..."
She hesitated.
"They describe someone inside the family who had been stealing money long before Richard Mercer ever appeared."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Everything he believed about his family's history was unraveling again.
May you like
Richard hadn't started the corruption.
He may have inherited it.
