Chapter 5: The Price of the Truth

The cool night air on the balcony was exactly what Emily needed. She leaned against the marble balustrade, looking out over the glittering skyline of Los Angeles.

“You stood up to her,” Daniel said, stepping up right behind her. The warmth of his body radiated against her back. “I’ve never seen anyone put Vanessa in her place like that.”

“I was terrified,” Emily admitted, turning around to face him. They were standing inches apart. The music from the ballroom drifted out, soft and romantic.

“You didn’t look terrified. You looked magnificent.” Daniel raised a hand, his fingers gently brushing a stray curl behind her ear. His touch was electric, sending a jolt straight to her heart. “I brought you here tonight to prove a point to the world, Emily. But I think I just proved something to myself.”

“What’s that?” she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“That I don't want you working for me anymore.”

Emily’s heart plummeted. Had she embarrassed him? Had she gone too far? “You’re… you’re firing me?”

“No,” Daniel smiled gently, stepping even closer, his eyes dropping to her lips. “I’m promoting you. To my partner. If you’ll let me.”

Before Emily could process the words, Daniel leaned in. His lips brushed hers, tentative at first, asking for permission. Emily closed her eyes, letting out a soft sigh, and kissed him back. It was a kiss that tasted like champagne and the promise of a completely different life. For a moment, the world faded away.

But inside the ballroom, disaster was brewing.

Vanessa hadn’t left. She was hiding in the ladies' lounge, pacing like a caged animal. Her phone buzzed. It was a text from a private investigator she had hired with her last remaining line of credit.

TEXT MESSAGE: I dug into the maid’s background. You were right. She’s hiding something massive. Look at the PDF.

Vanessa quickly opened the file. It was a birth certificate and a series of old legal documents from twenty-five years ago.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer, maniacal glee as she read the names on the paper. A wicked smile stretched across her face.

“Oh, Daniel,” Vanessa whispered to the empty room, her eyes gleaming with dark triumph. “You have no idea who you’re kissing.”

She screenshotted the document, selected Daniel’s contact, and hit send.

Out on the balcony, just as Emily and Daniel pulled apart, breathless and smiling, Daniel’s phone chimed loudly in his tuxedo pocket.

“Ignore it,” Emily whispered, feeling bold for the first time in her life.

“I should,” Daniel smiled, but he pulled the phone out out of habit. He glanced at the screen.

Emily watched as the warmth in Daniel’s eyes instantly vanished. The color drained from his face, replaced by a look of sheer horror and betrayal. He looked from his phone screen up to Emily, stepping backward as if she had suddenly caught fire.

“Daniel?” Emily asked, her stomach dropping. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

Daniel held up the phone, his voice shaking with a rage she had never heard before.

“Is this true?” he demanded, his voice cracking. “Tell me right now, Emily. Are you really Arthur Thorne’s daughter?”

Emily felt the world tilt on its axis. The air left her lungs. Her darkest, most guarded secret—the one she had changed her name to run away from—was out.

And looking at the fury in Daniel’s eyes, she knew her fairy tale had just turned into a nightmare.
