Chapter 17: The Sky Above the Lies

The cabin of the Sterling private jet was deathly quiet, save for the low hum of the engines as they cruised at forty thousand feet over the Atlantic.

Emily sat in a plush leather armchair, staring out the window at the endless expanse of clouds. Beside her, on a mahogany table, the black ledger lay open. Daniel had been pacing the aisle for the last two hours, his phone pressed to his ear, mobilizing a shadow team of forensic accountants to trace the account numbers in the book.

He finally hung up, rubbing his temples, and collapsed into the seat across from her.

“They verified it,” Daniel said, pouring a glass of scotch with a trembling hand. “The Geneva accounts are active. Billions of dollars have cycled through them over the last decade. My father didn't just steal fifty million. He used it as seed money to build an international criminal empire.”

Emily reached across the table, her fingers gently brushing against his wrist. “Daniel, you don't have to do this alone. We can take this to the FBI.”

“If I take this to the FBI, the stock of Sterling Enterprises plummets to zero,” Daniel replied fiercely. “Thousands of innocent employees will lose their jobs. My father’s legacy is a lie, but the company I built on top of it is real. I have to find him. I have to look him in the eye and make him dismantle the Syndicate himself.”

Emily looked at the ledger, tracing her finger over her father’s cramped handwriting. “Our fathers destroyed our lives. They left us with nothing but trauma and secrets.”

Daniel’s gaze softened. He set the scotch down and gently took her hand, interlacing his fingers with hers. “They didn't leave me with nothing, Emily. They inadvertently brought you to me.”

A blush crept up Emily’s neck. Despite the danger, despite the chaos of the last twenty-four hours, being this close to him sent a jolt of electricity straight to her heart.

“When I first saw you in that maid’s uniform,” Daniel confessed softly, his thumb tracing the back of her hand, “I thought you were just a quiet girl who kept her head down. But you’re the strongest person I’ve ever met. You stood up to Vanessa. You stood up to thugs in an alley. You stood up to your own father.”

“I had to,” Emily whispered, her eyes meeting his. “For my mother.”

“And I am going to make sure she never has to worry about a medical bill for the rest of her life,” Daniel promised. “When this is over, Emily. When we burn the Syndicate to the ground, you and I… we are going to start over.”

He leaned across the small table, capturing her lips in a deep, desperate kiss. It tasted of scotch, adrenaline, and a fierce, unspoken promise. In the sky, thousands of miles away from the ruins of their pasts, Emily finally felt like she belonged to someone.

But as they landed in Switzerland, the true nightmare was only just beginning.
