Chapter 18: The Viper’s Nest

Geneva at night was a fortress of wealth and secrecy. The cold Alpine wind whipped through the cobblestone streets as Daniel’s armored Maybach pulled up to the grand entrance of the Château de l'Ombre, a secluded, centuries-old estate that served as a playground for the European elite—and a front for the Syndicate’s money laundering operations.

Emily stepped out of the car, adjusting the velvet strap of her emerald-green evening gown. Daniel stepped out beside her, looking effortlessly lethal in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

“The ledger indicated a silent auction is happening here tonight,” Daniel murmured, offering her his arm. “The Syndicate uses it to wash their funds. My father—or one of his top lieutenants—will be inside.”

“We’re walking straight into a trap,” Emily whispered, though she held her head high, looping her arm through his.

“They don't know we know,” Daniel replied. “To them, I’m just Daniel Sterling, a billionaire CEO looking to buy some art. Stay close to me.”

They handed their gilded invitations to the armed guards at the door and stepped into the sprawling ballroom. It was a scene of decadent corruption. Men in expensive suits and women dripping in diamonds drank champagne while bidding millions on stolen antiquities.

Daniel expertly navigated the room, playing the part of the arrogant billionaire, while Emily kept her eyes peeled. She scanned the crowd, her heart pounding against her ribs.

Suddenly, a silver-haired woman in a sharp white suit approached them. She held a glass of champagne and wore a predatory smile.

“Daniel Sterling,” the woman purred with a thick French accent. “We were wondering if you would ever leave your little corporate sandbox in Los Angeles and join the real game.”

Daniel tensed but forced a smooth smile. “And you are?”

“Madame Rousseau,” she replied, her eyes flicking to Emily with morbid curiosity. “And this must be the famous Emily Thorne. News travels fast in our circles. We heard about the little altercation at your glass house this morning.”

Emily’s blood ran cold. The Syndicate already knew what had happened in California.

“If you know who I am,” Daniel said, dropping the polite facade, his voice turning deadly, “then you know why I’m here. I want to see Richard.”

Madame Rousseau laughed softly. “Richard is a very busy man. He doesn't take meetings with children throwing tantrums. However…” She reached into her blazer and pulled out a sleek, black keycard, handing it to Emily, not Daniel.

“He left this for you, Miss Thorne,” Rousseau said smoothly. “Room 404, on the top floor. He suggested you might want to retrieve what belongs to you before you start making demands.”

“What belongs to me?” Emily asked, her voice shaking.

Rousseau leaned in, whispering in Emily’s ear. “Did you really think Arthur left your mother in that clinic because he didn't care? Or did he leave her there because she was the collateral that kept him obedient?”
