Chapter 10: The Vault of Secrets

The interior of Daniel’s Bentley was warm, smelling of rich leather and the faint trace of his cedarwood cologne. Emily sat in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead as the wipers frantically cleared the driving rain from the windshield.

Daniel was behind the wheel, his knuckles white. He had dismissed his security team, insisting on driving Emily himself. They were parked in a secluded overlook above the city, away from the paparazzi and the loan sharks.

“Talk,” Daniel commanded, staring out at the city lights.

Emily took a deep, trembling breath. “I was fifteen when it happened. When the Sterling embezzlement hit the news. I remember coming home from school to find the FBI raiding our house. They took everything. My father didn’t even say goodbye. He just packed a bag, drained my mother’s personal savings, and vanished.”

Daniel turned his head slightly, listening, though his expression remained guarded.

“The stress broke my mother,” Emily continued, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek. “She had a massive stroke a year later. She’s been in care ever since. I didn't see a dime of that fifty million, Daniel. I spent the last ten years scrubbing toilets and wiping tables to keep her alive. I changed my name to Davis because everywhere I went, people spat on me for what Arthur Thorne did.”

She turned to face him, her eyes fierce despite her tears. “I hate him as much as you do. Maybe more.”

Daniel searched her face, looking for the lie. He had been trained by the best corporate interrogators in the world to spot deception. But all he saw in Emily was raw, unadulterated pain.

“If you hate him,” Daniel said slowly, “why didn't you tell me the truth from the start?”

“Would you have hired me?” Emily countered bitterly. “If you saw the name Thorne on my application, would you have even let me through the front gates? I needed the job, Daniel. I needed to survive.”

Daniel remained silent. He knew she was right. He would have had her thrown out immediately.

Emily reached into the inner pocket of her hoodie, pulling out a small, tightly wrapped package wrapped in waterproof plastic. She set it on the center console between them.

“What is that?” Daniel asked, his eyes dropping to the package.

“My insurance policy,” Emily said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Before my father left, he hid a safety deposit box key in my bedroom. I was so angry, I never used it. But a few years ago, when we were desperate for money, I went to the bank. There was no money inside.”

Daniel’s brow furrowed. “Then what was it?”

“A ledger,” Emily answered, unwrapping the plastic to reveal a small, black leather notebook. “It’s a handwritten record of every offshore account, every shell company, and every bribe Arthur Thorne ever made. Including the names of the people inside Sterling Enterprises who helped him orchestrate the embezzlement. He didn’t act alone, Daniel.”

Daniel stared at the black book as if it were a loaded gun. His father’s partners—the board members he worked with every single day—they could be complicit. The rot in his company could be deeper than he ever imagined.

“Why are you giving this to me?” Daniel asked, looking up at her, the hostility finally melting into genuine awe.

“Because you’re the only one with the power to destroy him,” Emily said, leaning slightly closer. “I don't want his money. I just want him to pay for what he did to my mother. And to your father.”

Daniel reached out, his hand covering hers as she rested it on the ledger. The electric spark between them reignited, stronger and more dangerous than before.

“If we use this,” Daniel said, his voice dropping low, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles, “Vanessa, the board, the loan sharks... they will all come for us. It will be war.”

“I’ve been fighting my whole life,” Emily said, her gaze locking with his. “I’m not afraid.”

Daniel finally smiled—a real, dangerous, breathtaking smile. “Then we destroy them together.”
