Chapter 1: The Sound of Shattered Glass

The silence in the grand foyer was deafening, heavier than the glittering crystal chandelier hanging above them. The black-and-white footage looping on the tablet in Daniel’s hand was the only thing moving in the room.

Vanessa’s hand trembled. The manicured fingers that had just struck Emily across the face were now twitching with panic. She opened her mouth to speak, to spin a web of lies as she always did, but the cold, unforgiving evidence had stripped her of her voice.

“Daniel, I…” Vanessa stammered, taking a step toward the tall, dark-haired billionaire.

“Don’t,” Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. It wasn’t a yell; it was a command laced with absolute ice. He handed the tablet to his head of security. “Pack her things. Have them left on the curb. Vanessa, you are no longer welcome in this house, nor in any of my properties.”

“You can’t be serious!” Vanessa shrieked, her aristocratic composure finally shattering. She gestured wildly toward Emily, who was still kneeling by the brown leather bag, one hand pressed to her burning, red cheek. “You’re throwing me out over a maid? Over a misunderstanding?”

“A misunderstanding?” Daniel took a slow, deliberate step toward Vanessa. The height difference was intimidating, and Vanessa instinctively shrank back. “You planted a three-million-dollar heirloom in her bag and assaulted her in my home. That is a crime, Vanessa. If you don’t leave quietly, I will have the police escort you out. Choose.”

The remaining guests and staff murmured in shock. Margaret, the head housekeeper who had nearly fainted from the drama, quickly rushed to Emily’s side, placing a warm, comforting hand on the trembling girl’s shoulder.

Vanessa’s eyes darted around the room, realizing she had zero allies left. Her gaze finally snapped to Emily. There was no apology in her eyes, only a toxic, bubbling hatred. With a sharp turn on her stiletto heels, Vanessa stormed out of the foyer, the heavy mahogany doors slamming behind her with a final, echoing thud.

Daniel let out a slow breath before turning his attention entirely to Emily. The coldness in his eyes vanished, replaced by an unsettling warmth that made Emily’s heart skip a painful beat.

He knelt on the cold marble floor—destroying the crease of his thousand-dollar suit pants—until he was at eye level with her.

“Are you alright?” he asked softly, reaching out. He stopped himself just before his fingers brushed her jawline, respecting her space.

“I… I didn’t take it, Mr. Sterling,” Emily whispered, a single tear escaping and tracking a hot path over the stinging skin of her cheek.

“I know, Emily. I know.” Daniel’s jaw clenched as he looked at the red handprint forming on her pale skin. “And I am so incredibly sorry that this happened under my roof. Margaret?”

“Yes, Mr. Sterling,” the older woman replied instantly.

“Take Emily to the private sitting room. Get some ice for her face. No more working today. In fact, she’s on paid leave until she feels ready to return.”

Emily tried to stand, her knees shaking in her standard-issue uniform. “No, please, sir. I need this job. I can work.”

Daniel stood up, gently taking her elbow to help her balance. “You aren’t losing your job, Emily. But you are done for the day. That is an order.”

As Margaret led Emily away down the sprawling corridor, Emily glanced back over her shoulder. Daniel was still standing in the center of the foyer, watching her walk away. For the first time in her life, the invisible wall between the billionaire employer and the invisible maid felt like it was beginning to crack.
