Chapter 3: The Whispers of High Society

Within forty-eight hours, the story had leaked. But it wasn’t the truth that hit the internet—it was Vanessa’s twisted version of it.

Emily scrolled through her phone in the staff breakroom, her heart sinking as she read the headline from The Beverly Hills Insider:

BILLIONAIRE BLINDED: IS DANIEL STERLING’S NEW HOUSEKEEPER A MASTER MANIPULATOR?

The article claimed that Emily had doctored the CCTV footage using a friend in tech to frame Vanessa out of spite and jealousy. It alleged that Emily was a "social climber" using dark tactics to seduce her billionaire boss. The comments section was a warzone of wealthy elites calling for Emily to be thrown in prison.

“Don’t read that garbage,” Margaret said, snatching the phone from Emily’s hands. “Vanessa paid off that gossip rag. Everyone knows she’s a snake.”

“But the whole world thinks I’m a thief,” Emily whispered, tears pricking her eyes. “Even the other staff members are looking at me differently. I heard the chef whispering about me this morning. I should just quit.”

“If you quit, she wins,” a deep voice said from the doorway.

Emily jumped. Daniel stood there, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, looking more handsome and intimidating than ever. He walked into the breakroom, a space he rarely ever entered, causing the few other staff members present to quickly scurry out.

“I just saw the article,” Daniel said, his jaw tight. “My legal team is already drafting a cease and desist. But we need to do more than send legal threats. We need to control the narrative.”

“How?” Emily asked, feeling utterly defeated. “I’m a nobody. No one is going to listen to me.”

“They will if you’re standing next to me,” Daniel stated matter-of-factly. He pulled an elegant, silver-embossed envelope from his breast pocket and laid it on the table. “Tomorrow night is the Starlight Charity Gala. Every major media outlet and high-society family will be there. Including Vanessa.”

Emily stared at the envelope as if it were a bomb. “You want me to go to a billionaire's gala? Mr. Sterling, I clean bathrooms for a living. I don't belong there.”

“You belong wherever you choose to be,” Daniel said firmly. “If we hide you away, it looks like you’re guilty. If you walk into that ballroom on my arm, holding your head high, it sends a message that Vanessa’s lies have no power over us.”

“On your arm?” Emily’s breath hitched.

“As my date,” Daniel clarified, the faintest ghost of a smile touching his lips. “I’ve already had a designer send a selection of gowns to the guest wing. Margaret will help you get ready.”

Before Emily could protest, Daniel turned to leave. He paused at the door, glancing back over his shoulder. “Don’t let them break you, Emily. You are stronger than all of them combined.”

As Daniel walked away, Emily looked at Margaret, who simply smiled and clapped her hands together. “Well,” the older woman beamed, “it looks like we have a lot of work to do, Cinderella.”
