Chapter 16: The Phantom Patriarch

The revelation dropped like a live grenade in the center of the glass house.
Your father is the head of the Syndicate.
Daniel stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck. His breathing became erratic, his chest heaving under his soaked dress shirt. For a decade, he had visited a marble grave in the Sterling family plot, leaving white roses, mourning a man he thought was a tragic victim of corporate greed.
“You’re lying,” Daniel repeated, his voice barely a rasp. He stepped toward Arthur Thorne, grabbing the older man by the lapels of his tactical coat. “My father was an honorable man! He built Sterling Enterprises from the ground up!”
“And he realized that building things the legal way takes too long,” Arthur spat, completely unbothered by Daniel’s grip. “Richard realized there was more money in the shadows. He used Julian to manipulate the board, and he used me to move the funds offshore. When the feds got too close, Richard decided one of us had to take the fall. He chose himself—faked his death, took the fifty million, and left us to deal with the fallout.”
“No,” Daniel gasped, releasing Arthur and turning to Julian. “Julian, tell me he’s lying.”
Julian Vance, clutching his bleeding, ruined hand, let out a pathetic whimper. “It’s true, Daniel. Richard orchestrated it all. We’ve been funneling company profits to his accounts in Geneva for ten years. If we stopped, he threatened to expose us.”
Emily watched as the billionaire who had just rescued her completely crumbled. The formidable, untouchable Daniel Sterling looked like a lost, heartbroken little boy.
She didn't think about the danger. She didn't think about her father standing inches away. Emily ran to Daniel, wrapping her arms around his waist, holding him together as his world shattered.
“Daniel, breathe,” she pleaded softly, pressing her cheek against his chest. She could feel his heart hammering wildly. “Look at me. Don't let them break you.”
Daniel looked down at her. The warmth in her eyes was the only real thing left in a world built on lies. He took a deep, shuddering breath, his CEO mask slamming back into place. The heartbreak vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying coldness.
“Secure them,” Daniel barked to his security team.
The guards surged forward. Arthur’s mercenaries, vastly outnumbered, dropped their weapons and surrendered.
“Wait!” Vanessa shrieked from the corner as two burly security guards hoisted her to her feet by her elbows. “Daniel, please! I had nothing to do with this! I didn't know about your father!”
Daniel walked slowly over to Vanessa. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.
“You brought armed thugs after Emily. You conspired with Julian,” Daniel said quietly. “I am handing Julian and Arthur over to the authorities with the ledger as proof of their embezzlement. But you, Vanessa?” Daniel leaned in. “I’m tossing you out onto the street. And I will personally call Mandalay Credit to let them know exactly where you are.”
Vanessa’s face drained of all color. “No… Daniel, they’ll kill me!”
“Then you better start running,” Daniel whispered.
As the guards dragged a screaming Vanessa, a bleeding Julian, and a silent, calculating Arthur out of the house, Daniel stood alone in the shattered foyer with Emily.

He bent down, picking up the black leather ledger from the glass-strewn floor. He stared at it for a long time.
“Pack a bag, Emily,” Daniel said, his voice stripped of all emotion. “We’re going to Geneva.”
