Chapter 4: Diamonds and Deception

The flash of paparazzi cameras was blinding.

Emily stepped out of the black armored SUV, her hand resting delicately in Daniel’s firm grip. The moment her foot touched the red carpet, a chorus of gasps rippled through the crowd of photographers and elite guests.

She didn’t look like a maid. She looked like royalty.

She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk gown that cascaded down her figure like liquid sapphire. Her hair, usually tied back in a messy bun, was styled in elegant, sweeping waves. But the real statement was around her neck.

Resting against her collarbone was the exact three-million-dollar diamond statement necklace Vanessa had tried to frame her for stealing.

“Steady,” Daniel whispered in her ear, his breath sending a shiver down her spine. “You look absolutely perfect.”

“I feel like I’m going to throw up,” Emily whispered back through a tight, practiced smile.

“Just keep walking. I’ve got you.”

They moved gracefully up the steps and into the grand ballroom. The chatter in the room died down instantly as they entered. Whispers ignited like wildfire. The message was loud and clear: Daniel trusted Emily enough to wear his family’s most prized heirloom. It destroyed Vanessa’s narrative without a single word being spoken.

Across the room, standing by the champagne tower, Vanessa looked like she had seen a ghost. She was wearing a red designer dress, trying to maintain her wealthy façade, but the sight of Emily wearing that necklace made her face contort with pure, ugly rage.

Unable to control her impulses, Vanessa grabbed a glass of champagne and marched directly toward them.

“Well, well,” Vanessa sneered loudly, drawing the attention of the surrounding guests. “I suppose the staff is allowed to play dress-up now? Be careful, Daniel. If she leaves with that necklace, you’ll never see it again.”

Daniel stepped slightly in front of Emily, shielding her. “Vanessa, I warned you to stay away from us. You are lucky I haven't handed the security footage over to the police yet.”

“Go ahead!” Vanessa laughed sharply, though her eyes were frantic. “Do you think anyone will care? She’s a nobody! A street rat playing Cinderella. Tell them, Emily. Tell them what a pathetic little gold-digger you are.”

Emily felt the familiar sting of tears, the urge to run and hide. But then she felt the cool weight of the diamonds against her skin. She remembered her mother, fighting through illness, telling her to never let anyone diminish her worth.

Emily stepped around Daniel, closing the distance between herself and Vanessa.

“I may not have a trust fund, Miss Kensington,” Emily said, her voice clear and ringing through the silent room. “But I have something you clearly don’t. Integrity. I work hard for every dollar I make. You just steal and lie to keep up appearances because you have nothing real in your life.”

The crowd audibly gasped. A few people even chuckled.

Vanessa’s face turned bright red. Infuriated, she raised her hand, clutching the champagne glass, preparing to throw the sticky liquid right into Emily’s face.

But Daniel caught Vanessa’s wrist mid-air. His grip was like iron.

“Do it,” Daniel whispered dangerously, “and I will personally ensure your family’s shipping company is liquidated by Monday morning.”

Vanessa froze, the color draining from her face. She yanked her arm free, threw her glass onto the floor where it shattered into a hundred pieces, and ran out of the ballroom in utter humiliation.

Daniel turned to Emily, a look of profound respect and something much deeper in his eyes. “You were incredible.”

“I think I need some air,” Emily breathed out, her adrenaline crashing.

“Let’s go to the terrace,” he said softly, taking her hand.
