Chapter 9: The Brother, The Son, and The Hidden Bloodline

Chapter 9: The Brother, The Son, and The Hidden Bloodline

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The words Gabriel had spoken seemed impossible.

Too unbelievable.

Too painful.

“Evelyn Escalante was your real mother.”

Nathan stared at Amelia.

The woman he had married.

The woman whose inheritance he had tried to take.

The woman he had accused of being selfish.

And now he was learning that her mother had been the person who protected him before he even knew her name.

“I don’t understand,” Nathan whispered.

Gabriel looked at him.

“You were born into a family war you never knew existed.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became louder.

“No, that can’t be true.”

Amelia understood his reaction.

She had spent her entire life knowing Evelyn as her mother.

A woman who loved her.

A woman who sacrificed everything for her.

A woman who never mentioned having another child.

Especially not Nathan.

“How?” Amelia asked.

Her voice was quiet.

“How could my mother be his mother?”

Gabriel looked at the old documents.

“Because the truth was hidden before either of you were old enough to understand it.”

Thirty-three years earlier, the Grant and Escalante families were connected through more than business.

They were connected through trust.

Through friendship.

Through promises made by previous generations.

Richard Grant and Evelyn Escalante had grown up together.

They knew the family empire was becoming corrupted.

They knew someone inside the organization was stealing from the trust.

And they knew the person responsible had enough power to destroy anyone who stood against them.

That person was Victoria.

But there was another complication.

Richard and Evelyn had discovered something shocking.

The legal structure of the Escalante-Grant Trust had a hidden protection clause.

If corruption threatened the family assets, the rightful successor would be the child born from both bloodlines.

Nathan.

A child Victoria could never control if the truth became public.

“So she changed everything,” Daniel said.

Gabriel nodded.

“Victoria knew Nathan was the key.”

Nathan looked down.

“She took me.”

Nobody corrected him.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

She took his history.

His name.

His connection to his real family.

She built a world where he depended only on her.

Amelia sat silently in the apartment.

The place that had once been her mother’s sanctuary now felt like a hidden archive.

Every wall had a secret.

Every object had a purpose.

“My mother knew,” Amelia said.

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she was afraid.”

Amelia looked at him.

“Of Victoria?”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Of what would happen to you.”

He explained that Evelyn had spent years gathering evidence.

She knew Victoria was dangerous.

She knew she would do anything to protect her control.

“If Evelyn exposed the truth too early, Nathan would have become a target,” Gabriel said.

Nathan looked surprised.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You were the one person who could legally destroy everything Victoria built.”

Nathan looked away.

His entire life had been built around a family name.

But now that name felt like a cage.

That afternoon, the investigators uncovered another discovery.

A hidden account connected to Victoria.

But this time, the name attached to the account shocked everyone.

Nathan Grant.

Nathan immediately stood.

“What?”

Daniel examined the documents.

“This account was created shortly after your birth.”

Nathan looked confused.

“I never knew about this.”

Amelia looked at the papers.

“Someone used his name.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Victoria had created financial accounts under Nathan’s identity.

Money had moved through them for decades.

The purpose was clear.

If investigators ever discovered the fraud, Nathan would appear responsible.

He wasn’t just being controlled.

He was being prepared as a future scapegoat.

Nathan’s face turned pale.

“She was going to blame me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

The realization hurt more than the betrayal itself.

Because Nathan finally understood.

Victoria didn’t see him as a son.

She saw him as protection.

A shield.

A person she could sacrifice.

That evening, Nathan confronted Victoria.

She was sitting alone in the mansion library.

The same room where she had controlled business decisions for years.

But now the power was gone.

“You knew.”

Victoria didn’t look surprised.

“I knew you would eventually find out.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“You knew Evelyn was my mother.”

A long silence.

Then Victoria answered.

“Yes.”

The word broke something inside him.

“Why?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because I loved you.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

His voice trembled.

“You loved what I represented.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with emotion.

“You were a child.”

“And you used me.”

“I protected you.”

“You erased me.”

The room became silent.

Victoria looked away.

For the first time, she looked less like a powerful businesswoman.

And more like someone who had lost everything because of her own choices.

“I was afraid,” she admitted.

Nathan stared.

“Of what?”

Victoria whispered:

“Of losing everything.”

Later that night, Amelia found Nathan sitting outside the mansion.

He looked exhausted.

“I hated you,” he said.

Amelia sat beside him.

“I know.”

“I thought you were trying to take my family away.”

Amelia looked forward.

“And now?”

Nathan gave a painful smile.

“Now I realize I never knew what my family was.”

Silence.

Then Nathan said something Amelia didn’t expect.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“For what?”

“For the apartment.”

A pause.

“For the dinner.”

Another pause.

“For making you feel like you had to fight alone.”

Amelia didn’t forgive him immediately.

She couldn’t.

Too much had happened.

But she saw something she hadn’t seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

“I don’t know what happens next,” she said.

Nathan nodded.

“Neither do I.”

The next morning, Gabriel arrived with a final piece of information.

Something he had kept hidden.

“I found the missing pages from Evelyn’s journal.”

Amelia immediately stood.

“Where?”

Gabriel placed them on the table.

“I kept them hidden.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You had them?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Because Evelyn wanted me to wait.”

Amelia opened the pages.

The first line made her heart stop.

"The truth about Nathan’s birth is not the greatest secret."

She continued reading.

"The person who betrayed us was not acting alone."

Another sentence.

"Someone inside the Escalante family helped Victoria."

Amelia froze.

Her own family.

Not just the Grants.

The Escalantes too.

Then she read the final lines.

"If Amelia discovers this, she must know one thing: the person closest to her may be the one who knows the most."

Everyone looked at Amelia.

Nathan frowned.

“Who is closest to you?”

Amelia looked at the page.

Her mind raced through every person she trusted.

Family.

Friends.

Employees.

Then she remembered something.

A person who had always been there.

A person who knew about her mother’s work.

A person who had access to the apartment.

A person who disappeared after Evelyn died.

Amelia slowly whispered:

“No…”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You know who it is.”

Amelia’s face went pale.

Because the final secret was not hidden in the past.

May you like

It was standing beside them.

To be continued…
