Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Trust

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Trust
The Grant family mansion had never felt so quiet.
For years, the house had been filled with laughter, expensive parties, business meetings, and carefully controlled appearances.
But that night, the silence felt different.

It wasn’t peaceful.
It was the silence before everything collapsed.
Nathan stood frozen near the window, watching the attorneys and investigators walk toward the front entrance.
His confident expression had disappeared.
For the first time, Amelia saw something she had never seen before.
Fear.
“What did you do?” Nathan asked.
His voice was lower now.
Not angry.
Uncertain.
Amelia looked at him.
“I protected what my mother left me.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You have no right to bring outsiders into this house.”
Amelia turned toward her.
“This house?”
Victoria immediately stopped.
The question hung in the air.
Because everyone in the room understood what Amelia meant.
Victoria had spent decades acting like the Grant family owned everything.
But now Amelia was challenging that belief.
“This is your family’s home,” Victoria said coldly.
“No,” Amelia replied.
“It’s a property owned by the Grant Family Trust.”
Nathan frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Amelia looked at him.
“You really never knew.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
“Knew what?”
Before Amelia could answer, the front doors opened.
A tall man in a dark suit entered with several professionals behind him.
“Mrs. Amelia Grant?”
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.”
The man introduced himself.
“Daniel Reeves. Attorney representing the Escalante-Grant Family Trust.”
Nathan immediately looked confused.
“Escalante?”
Amelia’s expression remained calm.
“My mother’s family name.”
Daniel handed Amelia a folder.
“We received your message. We also received the digital copies of the files from the flash drive.”
Victoria’s face became pale.
“You had no right to access private family documents.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Those documents were never private property of the Grant family.”
He opened the folder.
“They belong to the trust.”
The room went silent.
Nathan looked at Amelia.
“You knew about this?”
“I knew my mother created protections around her assets.”
“You never told me?”
Amelia gave a small, disappointed smile.
“You never asked.”
Nathan looked away.
Because that was true.
He had never asked about her mother.
Never asked about her family history.
Never asked why Amelia was so careful with certain documents.
He only cared about what he could gain.
Daniel placed several documents on the table.
“These records show that the riverfront apartment was transferred into the family trust twenty-five years ago.”
Victoria interrupted.
“That apartment was given to Amelia.”
“Yes,” Daniel replied.
“But legally protected from outside claims.”
Nathan’s eyes widened.
“Outside claims?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Including spouses, business partners, and anyone attempting unauthorized transfer.”
Amelia watched Nathan carefully.
He understood the meaning.
Even if he divorced her, he couldn’t touch it.
Even if Victoria pressured her, she couldn’t take it.
The apartment was untouchable.
Victoria suddenly laughed.
“You think some old documents can destroy this family?”
Daniel didn’t react.
“No.”
He opened another file.
“But these can.”
He placed copies of financial records on the table.
Nathan looked down.
His expression changed.
“What is this?”
“Transactions from the Grant Housing Foundation.”
Victoria immediately reached for the papers.
“Those are confidential.”
Daniel pulled them away.
“Not anymore.”
Amelia watched as Nathan read through the pages.
Numbers.
Transfers.
Payments.
Accounts.
Names.
His face became more confused with every page.
“Mom…”
Victoria avoided his eyes.
“Nathan, don’t listen to them.”
“But these signatures…”
He looked closer.
“These are yours.”
Victoria remained silent.
Nathan looked at Amelia.
“You’re accusing my mother of stealing?”
Amelia shook her head.
“I’m not accusing anyone.”
She pointed at the documents.
“The evidence is doing that.”
The investigators began reviewing the files.
One of the forensic accountants spoke quietly to Daniel.
“These numbers match the missing funds reported three years ago.”
Nathan turned.
“Missing funds?”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Don’t make this bigger than it is.”
The investigator looked at her.
“Millions of dollars disappeared from accounts connected to housing projects.”
The room became colder.
Nathan stepped back.
“My mother would never…”
But even he didn’t sound convinced.
Because deep down, Nathan knew something was wrong.
There had always been questions.
Unexplained business failures.
Sudden financial rescues.
Hidden accounts.
But he had ignored them.
Because ignoring problems was easier than facing the truth.
Amelia walked toward the fireplace.
She looked at an old family photograph sitting on the shelf.
Her mother had once told her:
"The truth can be buried, Amelia. But it cannot disappear."
At the time, she thought it was just advice.
Now she understood.
Her mother knew this day would come.
Daniel opened the flash drive case.
“There is more.”
Everyone looked at him.
Nathan swallowed.
“What else?”
Daniel removed another document.
“This was found inside the apartment.”
Victoria immediately stood.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
The reaction was too fast.
Too emotional.
Amelia noticed.
“You knew.”
Victoria didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“It’s a hospital record.”
Nathan frowned.
“A hospital record?”
Daniel nodded.
“From the year you were born.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“What does my birth record have to do with this?”
Daniel looked at Amelia.
Then back at Nathan.
“That is the question we need answered.”
Victoria’s voice became sharp.
“Enough.”
But nobody listened.
Daniel placed the document on the table.
Nathan slowly picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His hands began to shake.
“What…”
He looked at Victoria.
“This isn’t possible.”
Victoria’s face was completely pale.
“Nathan, listen to me.”
He looked at the record again.
Then at Amelia.
“What is this?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the room knew.
The document contained a secret that had been hidden for over thirty years.
A secret about Nathan’s identity.
A secret Victoria had protected since the day he was born.
Amelia watched her husband’s world fall apart.
Not because of money.
Not because of property.
But because the one person he trusted most had built his entire life on a lie.
Nathan slowly lowered the paper.
“Mom…”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Please.”
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
Nathan looked at her.
“Am I really your son?”
The question destroyed the room.
And for several seconds…
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the mansion lights flickered.
The investigators continued collecting evidence.
The attorneys prepared their next steps.
And Amelia realized something terrifying:
The apartment wasn’t just hiding financial crimes.
May you like
It was hiding the truth about the entire Grant family.
To be continued…
