Chapter 18: The Child Hidden From History

Chapter 18: The Child Hidden From History
The photograph remained on Amelia’s phone.
She had stared at it for almost ten minutes.
A picture that should not exist.
A moment from the past that had been buried for decades.

Evelyn Escalante.
Richard Grant.
And a child standing between them.
A child nobody knew about.
Not Nathan.
Not Amelia.
Not Alexander.
The caption beneath the image contained only four words:
“The forgotten heir returns.”
Amelia felt a cold sensation move through her.
After everything they had uncovered, she thought there were no more surprises left.
She had been wrong.
Nathan found her sitting alone in the foundation office.
The new headquarters was almost finished.
The place represented a new beginning.
But the message had brought the past back again.
“What happened?” Nathan asked.
Amelia silently handed him the phone.
The moment he saw the photograph, his expression changed.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
Nathan looked closer.
“That’s my father.”
Amelia nodded.
“And my mother.”
His eyes moved to the child.
“Who is that?”
Neither of them had an answer.
Within an hour, Daniel, Gabriel, and Alexander arrived.
The photograph was analyzed immediately.
Daniel examined the image carefully.
“It’s real.”
Alexander looked surprised.
“No digital editing?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“The age, the quality, the background. Everything matches the period.”
Gabriel stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
“I know that child.”
Everyone turned.
Nathan looked at him.
“You do?”
Gabriel nodded slowly.
“I thought I would never see this picture again.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“Who is it?”
Gabriel looked at Nathan.
Then answered:
“Your brother.”
The room went completely silent.
Nathan stared at him.
“My brother?”
Gabriel nodded.
“Richard had another child.”
Nathan shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
“It was supposed to be impossible.”
Gabriel explained that years ago, before Nathan was born, Richard had a relationship that created another branch of the family.
A child who was kept away from the Grant empire.
A child whose existence could change everything.
“Why didn’t anyone know?” Amelia asked.
Gabriel looked at the photograph.
“Because Richard wanted to protect him.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“Another secret.”
Gabriel looked at him sadly.
“Yes.”
The child’s name was revealed through old records.
Lucas Grant.
Born two years before Nathan.
Unlike Nathan, Lucas grew up away from wealth.
Away from the family name.
Away from the battles surrounding the trust.
But his existence created a problem.
The trust’s original bloodline agreement recognized both children.
Meaning Nathan was never the only possible heir.
Lucas was too.
Daniel looked through the documents.
“If Lucas is alive, he has legal rights.”
Alexander frowned.
“And someone hid that information.”
Everyone understood immediately.
Another person had benefited from the secret.
They searched through Evelyn’s remaining files.
This time, they focused on Lucas.
After hours of searching, Amelia discovered a hidden letter.
The envelope was old.
The handwriting was Evelyn’s.
She opened it.
"Richard,"
"I understand why you made this choice."
"But hiding Lucas does not erase the truth."
Amelia continued reading.
"A child should never become a secret because adults are afraid of consequences."
Nathan looked away.
The words hurt.
Because they described his own life.
A child turned into a secret.
The letter revealed something unexpected.
Evelyn had tried to bring Lucas back into the family.
But someone stopped her.
Someone threatened her.
Someone warned her that revealing Lucas would destroy everything.
The name appeared in the final paragraph.
Victoria Grant.
Nathan closed his eyes.
Again.
Victoria.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had protected him.
The woman who had controlled his life.
“She knew.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Yes.”
“She knew about Lucas?”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked angry.
“How many things did she hide?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
They found Lucas’s location through old employment records.
He was living quietly in another state.
No luxury.
No company.
No family connections.
Just an ordinary life.
Amelia insisted they meet him.
Nathan hesitated.
“What if he hates us?”
Amelia looked at him.
“He has every reason.”
That was the truth.
Lucas had spent his entire life outside a family he belonged to.
Just like Nathan had spent his life inside a family built on lies.
Both had lost something.
When they finally met Lucas, the first thing Nathan noticed was the resemblance.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same quiet sadness.
Lucas looked at Nathan for a long moment.
Then said:
“So you’re the brother everyone chose.”
Nathan felt the words.
“I didn’t know you existed.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“Neither did I.”
Silence.
Then Amelia stepped forward.
“Lucas, we want to explain.”
He looked at her.
“You’re Evelyn’s daughter.”
Amelia froze.
“How do you know?”
Lucas answered:
“Because your mother found me.”
Everyone became still.
“What?”
Lucas explained.
Years earlier, Evelyn had secretly visited him.
She told him the truth.
She told him about Nathan.
She told him about the trust.
“But she asked me to stay away.”
Nathan looked confused.
“Why?”
Lucas looked at him.
“Because she believed someone was still trying to destroy us.”
Lucas revealed the final piece of information.
Before Evelyn died, she discovered someone was manipulating both sides of the family.
Not Victoria.
Not Charles.
Someone else.
Someone who had access to everything.
The trust.
The companies.
The legal records.
The family history.
Lucas reached into his bag.
He removed a document.
“I found this after my mother died.”
Daniel immediately examined it.
The title made everyone freeze.
“Final Succession Protocol.”
Alexander looked confused.
“Another trust document?”
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.”
Nathan asked:
“What does it say?”
Lucas looked at him.
“It says the person who controls the future of the trust…”
A pause.
“Is not any of us.”
Everyone waited.
Lucas placed the document on the table.
The final line revealed the name.
The executor of the original trust: Evelyn Escalante.
Amelia stared.
“But my mother is dead.”
Lucas nodded.
“That’s why this is impossible.”
Then Daniel noticed something.
A hidden attachment.
A sealed instruction.
Created after Evelyn’s death.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a recorded message.
A video file.
Everyone gathered around.
The screen turned on.
And there she was.
Evelyn.
Alive.
Recorded before her death.
Looking directly into the camera.
Her first words shocked them:
"If you are watching this, then the person who killed the truth is still among you."
The room went silent.
Because Evelyn had known.
She had known someone would try to erase everything.
And she had left one final warning.
"Do not trust the person who appears to have lost the most."
The video paused.
Then a final name appeared on the screen.
May you like
A name nobody expected.
