Chapter 3: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Know

Chapter 3: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Know

Nathan stared at the hospital record as if the words on the page had somehow changed.

But they hadn’t.

The paper was still there.

The date was still there.

The name was still there.

And the truth he had spent his entire life believing was suddenly falling apart.

“Mom…”

His voice cracked.

Victoria Grant, the woman who had always controlled every room she entered, looked smaller than Amelia had ever seen her.

For decades, Victoria had been untouchable.

She had manipulated business partners, influenced family decisions, and convinced everyone around her that she was the person holding the Grant empire together.

But now, standing in the middle of her own mansion, surrounded by lawyers and investigators, she looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Nathan,” Victoria whispered.

“Tell me it’s not true.”

She didn’t answer.

That silence was worse than any confession.

Nathan slowly lowered the document.

“You knew.”

Victoria took a step forward.

“Listen to me. There are things you don’t understand.”

“No.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.”

His eyes filled with anger.

“My entire life… you lied to me.”

Amelia watched quietly.

She had expected anger.

She had expected denial.

But she had not expected the sadness that appeared on Nathan’s face.

Because for the first time, Nathan wasn’t thinking about money.

He wasn’t thinking about the company.

He wasn’t thinking about control.

He was thinking about his identity.

Daniel Reeves carefully approached.

“Nathan, before you make assumptions, we need to verify all information.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Verify?”

He held up the paper.

“This says my birth records were altered.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And the original record was hidden in my wife’s apartment?”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Amelia.

“You knew?”

Amelia shook her head.

“I knew my mother left something behind. I didn’t know what it was.”

Nathan looked away.

A strange expression crossed his face.

For years, he had believed Amelia was the outsider in the family.

The person who didn’t belong.

But now, he was beginning to realize something.

She was the only person in the room who had been honest with him.

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“Everyone needs to leave.”

The investigators exchanged looks.

Daniel remained calm.

“Mrs. Grant, we are here because financial crimes may have occurred.”

“This is my home.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“This property is connected to the trust under investigation.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You think you can walk into my house and destroy my family?”

Amelia answered quietly.

“You destroyed your own family.”

Everyone looked at her.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“You.”

A lifetime of resentment was hidden in that single word.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No. I just refused to become like you.”

Nathan looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Amelia took a breath.

“It means your mother has been trying to control my family’s assets for years.”

Nathan frowned.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Show him.”

Daniel opened another file.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Financial requests.

Property reports.

Nathan read through them.

His expression slowly changed.

“These are from Mom’s office.”

Daniel nodded.

“She attempted multiple times to gain control of the riverfront apartment.”

Nathan looked at Victoria.

“Why?”

Victoria remained silent.

“Why would you care about Amelia’s apartment?”

Still silence.

Then Amelia answered.

“Because she knew something was hidden there.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

Amelia looked at the flash drive.

“She wasn’t trying to destroy the wall because of renovation.”

She paused.

“She was trying to find what my mother left behind.”

The room became silent.

Nathan finally understood.

His mother wasn’t interested in the apartment.

She was afraid of it.

“What did my mother know?” he asked.

Amelia looked at him.

“That’s what we’re going to find out.”

Two hours later, the investigation expanded.

The attorneys moved into a private conference room.

The accountants began reviewing decades of financial records.

The mansion that once represented power became a place of questions.

Nathan sat alone in the library.

Amelia found him there.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The man sitting in front of her looked different.

Not because his appearance had changed.

But because his confidence was gone.

“I don’t know who I am,” Nathan said quietly.

Amelia remained near the doorway.

“You are still Nathan.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Am I?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Because she understood.

A person’s identity wasn’t just a name on a document.

It was every memory they carried.

Every person they trusted.

Every moment they believed was real.

Nathan looked at her.

“Why didn’t you leave me?”

Amelia was surprised by the question.

“What?”

“Tonight. When I broke that plate. When my mother demanded your apartment. When I treated you like…”

He stopped.

He couldn’t finish.

Amelia looked down.

“Because I spent years hoping the man I married was still there.”

Nathan looked at her.

“And now?”

She met his eyes.

“Now I don’t know.”

The honesty hurt him more than anger would have.

Before Nathan could respond, Daniel entered the room.

“We found something.”

Both of them turned.

“What?” Amelia asked.

Daniel held a new document.

“The hospital record was only the beginning.”

Nathan stood.

“What else?”

Daniel placed the document on the table.

“We traced the original birth file.”

Nathan looked confused.

“And?”

Daniel hesitated.

“The name on the original record was not Nathan Grant.”

The room went silent.

Nathan stared.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Thirty-three years ago, someone changed the records.”

Amelia felt a chill.

“Changed them to what?”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

“To make him appear as Victoria Grant’s biological son.”

Nathan stepped back.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel took a slow breath.

“We believe Nathan may have been adopted under false circumstances.”

Nathan’s face went pale.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“And the person who signed the documents…”

He paused.

“Was Amelia’s grandfather.”

Nobody spoke.

The connection was impossible.

The Grant family.

The Escalante family.

Two families that had spent decades believing they were separate.

But the evidence suggested something much deeper.

Nathan looked at Amelia.

“My family was connected to yours?”

Amelia had no answer.

Because the truth was becoming bigger than either of them expected.

The hidden documents.

The stolen money.

The fake records.

Everything led back to one event.

A secret adoption.

A stolen identity.

And a betrayal that began before Nathan was even old enough to understand the word family.

Daniel looked at both of them.

“There’s one more thing.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“What now?”

Daniel opened another file.

“The person who exposed this secret originally…”

He placed a photograph on the table.

“It was your mother, Amelia.”

Amelia froze.

“My mother?”

Daniel nodded.

“She discovered the truth years ago.”

Nathan stared at the photograph.

A picture of Amelia’s mother standing beside Victoria Grant.

Two women.

Two families.

One hidden secret.

And suddenly Amelia understood.

Her mother had not left behind a warning.

She had left behind a mission.

A mission to uncover the truth.

And now that truth was finally coming out.

To be continued…
