Chapter 10: The Person Amelia Trusted Most

Chapter 10: The Person Amelia Trusted Most

Amelia stared at the final page of her mother’s journal.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The words were written by Evelyn Escalante.

Her mother.

The woman who had spent her entire life protecting secrets.

But one sentence kept repeating in Amelia’s mind.

“The person closest to her may be the one who knows the most.”

She closed the journal slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Nathan watched her carefully.

“Amelia…”

She looked up.

“I know who she meant.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?”

Amelia hesitated.

Because saying the name out loud made everything feel real.

“Charles.”

Nathan frowned.

“Charles?”

“My mother’s attorney.”

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“Charles Whitmore?”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

The room became tense.

Gabriel looked at Daniel.

“Then we need to find him immediately.”

Amelia looked confused.

“Why?”

Gabriel’s face became serious.

“Because Charles wasn’t just Evelyn’s attorney.”

A pause.

“He was the person who helped create the trust.”

Charles Whitmore had been part of the Escalante family for more than thirty years.

He handled legal documents.

Estate planning.

Family agreements.

He was the person Evelyn trusted when she needed someone to protect her family.

After Evelyn’s death, Charles had been the one who helped Amelia organize everything.

The apartment.

The inheritance.

The remaining family assets.

He had always appeared loyal.

Reliable.

Almost like family.

And that was exactly why the possibility hurt.

“Are you saying he betrayed my mother?” Amelia asked.

Gabriel shook his head.

“I’m saying we need proof.”

Daniel agreed.

“Trust is exactly what allowed this situation to continue for so long.”

They searched for Charles immediately.

But when Daniel contacted his office, nobody answered.

His assistant claimed he was away on business.

His home was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

The timing was too perfect.

“He knew,” Nathan said quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

“He knew we were close.”

Amelia didn’t want to believe it.

Charles had been the person who sat with her after her mother died.

He was the person who told her:

"Your mother left you everything because she believed you were strong enough to protect it."

Now those words felt different.

Like a warning.

Not encouragement.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the Grant family continued.

The evidence against Victoria grew stronger.

The hidden accounts.

The forged documents.

The manipulated trust agreements.

But Daniel discovered something unexpected.

“Victoria wasn’t the only person moving money.”

Nathan looked up.

“What?”

Daniel placed several reports on the table.

“Someone else had access to the accounts.”

“Who?”

Daniel pointed.

“Charles Whitmore.”

Amelia froze.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“The records show he approved several transfers.”

Nathan stared at the documents.

“So he worked with Victoria.”

“Possibly.”

Amelia shook her head.

“There has to be another explanation.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You trusted him.”

The words were not an accusation.

Just a painful observation.

Amelia looked down.

“Yes.”

That evening, Amelia returned to her mother’s apartment.

She needed to see it again.

Not as a daughter.

But as someone searching for the truth.

She walked through every room.

The living room.

The bedroom.

The old study.

The place where her mother spent her final years.

Then she noticed something.

A book on the shelf.

An old legal textbook.

It looked ordinary.

But when Amelia pulled it out, she felt something.

It was heavier than it should be.

She opened the cover.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

A small envelope.

Her heart raced.

The envelope had one name.

Charles Whitmore.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from her mother.

"Charles,"

"If you are reading this, then I already know what you have done."

Amelia stopped breathing.

She continued.

"I trusted you with my family's future. I trusted you with my daughter's safety. But greed changed you."

Her hands shook.

The letter continued.

"You helped Victoria alter the trust documents. You helped hide Nathan's identity. You believed you could control the inheritance forever."

Amelia covered her mouth.

The evidence was real.

Charles had betrayed her mother.

But there was more.

"However, I know why you did it."

Amelia frowned.

Why?

She continued reading.

"You did not betray us because you wanted money."

A pause.

"You did it because of your son."

Amelia froze.

Charles had a son?

She read the next line.

"You believed your son deserved the inheritance more than Nathan."

The truth became darker.

Charles wasn’t just helping Victoria.

He had his own plan.

When Amelia returned to the mansion, everyone was waiting.

She placed the letter on the table.

Daniel read it carefully.

“This changes everything.”

Nathan looked confused.

“Charles has a son?”

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“And if he believes his son is the rightful heir…”

“He would have a reason to destroy Nathan,” Amelia finished.

Daniel checked the records.

“We need to identify him.”

Minutes later, the answer appeared.

The name on the document shocked everyone.

Alexander Whitmore.

Nathan looked confused.

“Who is Alexander?”

Daniel stared at the file.

“A businessman.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked up.

“He owns several companies connected to the Grant empire.”

The room went silent.

Amelia felt a chill.

Someone had been close to them all along.

Someone who benefited from the chaos.

Someone building power quietly.

That night, Amelia received another message.

Unknown number.

This time, there was no distorted voice.

Only a photograph.

She opened it.

Her heart stopped.

The image showed Charles Whitmore meeting Victoria Grant years earlier.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

Standing beside them was a young man.

Alexander.

The message underneath said:

“Your mother knew the truth about him.”

Another message arrived seconds later.

“Ask why she never told you.”

Amelia stared at the screen.

Because now she had another question.

Why would her mother hide the truth about Charles?

And what else had Evelyn discovered before she died?

The next morning, Daniel uncovered something hidden in Charles’s legal records.

A sealed document.

One that had never been opened.

The document was dated the same year Nathan was born.

And the title was:

"Emergency Succession Agreement."

Daniel looked at Amelia.

“This may explain everything.”

She opened the file.

The first paragraph made everyone silent.

"If Nathan Grant’s identity is ever exposed, ownership of the Escalante-Grant Trust shall be transferred according to the original bloodline agreement."

Nathan looked confused.

“So who inherits?”

Daniel turned the page.

Then his expression changed.

Because the answer was not Nathan.

Not Amelia.

Not Gabriel.

The name written on the final line was:

Alexander Whitmore.

The person who had been hidden in the shadows.

The person whose father betrayed them.

May you like

The person who may have been waiting decades for this moment.

To be continued…
