Chapter 12: Richard Grant’s Hidden Return

Chapter 12: Richard Grant’s Hidden Return

The photograph slipped from Amelia’s fingers.

For several seconds, she simply stared at it.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

Richard Grant.

Nathan’s biological father.

The man everyone believed had disappeared decades ago.

The man whose absence created the chain of lies that destroyed two families.

Standing beside her mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

Planning something.

“No…” Amelia whispered.

Nathan, who had entered the room, immediately noticed her expression.

“What happened?”

She slowly handed him the photograph.

The moment he saw it, all the color drained from his face.

“That’s him.”

His voice was barely audible.

“My father.”

Amelia nodded.

“But this picture was taken years after everyone said he was gone.”

Nathan looked at the date.

His hands tightened.

“He was alive.”

The realization was painful.

Because Nathan had spent his entire life believing his father abandoned him.

Now he was discovering something worse.

His father had been there.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Waiting.

Daniel and Gabriel arrived within minutes.

When Gabriel saw the photograph, his expression changed.

“You found it.”

Amelia looked at him.

“You knew?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“I suspected.”

Nathan immediately turned toward him.

“You suspected my father was alive?”

Gabriel looked at Nathan.

“I didn’t know where he was.”

“But you knew?”

Gabriel sighed.

“Yes.”

Nathan stepped back.

“Everyone knew something except me.”

The sentence carried years of pain.

Everyone had protected him from the truth.

But nobody had asked what the lies would cost him.

Gabriel explained what happened after Richard disappeared.

“Richard discovered Victoria’s plan.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Her plan to steal the trust?”

Gabriel nodded.

“But that wasn’t the only thing.”

He looked at Nathan.

“Victoria wanted control over you.”

Nathan frowned.

“I was a baby.”

“Exactly.”

Gabriel explained that Nathan’s existence threatened Victoria’s control.

If Nathan’s true identity became public, he would have legal rights to challenge her.

So Richard made a decision.

He would disappear publicly.

But secretly continue protecting Nathan.

“He worked with Evelyn,” Gabriel said.

Amelia looked at the photograph again.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

Nathan shook his head.

“So they both lied to me.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“They lied because they believed the truth would get you killed.”

The room became silent.

Daniel examined the photograph carefully.

“This image was not taken in secret.”

“No,” Gabriel replied.

“It was taken intentionally.”

“Why?”

Gabriel looked at Amelia.

“Because Evelyn and Richard wanted someone to find it one day.”

Amelia understood.

The photograph was another message.

Another piece of the puzzle.

Her mother had been leaving a path.

A path only Amelia would eventually follow.

They searched the apartment again.

This time, they looked for evidence connected to Richard.

Hours passed.

Then Nathan noticed something.

A loose wooden panel behind a bookshelf.

He touched it.

“It’s moving.”

The investigators carefully removed the panel.

Behind it was another hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal box.

Amelia opened it.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

All addressed to one person.

Nathan.

Nathan froze.

“These are from my father?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan picked up the first letter.

The date was twenty years earlier.

He opened it.

"My son,"

His eyes immediately filled with emotion.

He continued reading.

"I know you will hate me when you learn the truth."

Nathan stopped.

Amelia looked at him.

“You don’t have to read it alone.”

But Nathan continued.

"Every day I stayed away from you was a day I wanted to run back."

His breathing became heavier.

"But if I returned too soon, Victoria would have known. She would have taken away the only protection you had."

Nathan closed his eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

His father had not abandoned him.

He had sacrificed his place in his son's life.

The next letter revealed something even more shocking.

"Evelyn knows the truth about your birth. She also knows the truth about Victoria's actions."

Nathan continued.

"But there is someone else who knows more."

Another name.

Another secret.

"Marcus Hale."

Everyone froze.

The same attorney who had stolen the medical records.

The same man who disappeared.

The same person they thought was only working for Victoria.

Richard’s letter continued.

"Marcus was never loyal to Victoria. He was loyal to himself."

Daniel looked concerned.

“So Marcus was manipulating both sides?”

“Most likely,” Gabriel said.

Richard had suspected that Marcus wanted control over the trust.

Not for Victoria.

Not for the Grants.

For himself.

Then Nathan opened the final letter.

The handwriting looked different.

More rushed.

The final letter had been written shortly before Richard disappeared.

"Nathan, if you are reading this, I may not be able to return."

Nathan stopped.

His hands shook.

"There is one truth you must understand. The person who destroyed our family is not the person you think."

Everyone leaned closer.

The next sentence changed everything.

"Victoria was protecting a secret, but she was not the person who started the betrayal."

Silence.

Nathan looked confused.

“Then who?”

The letter continued.

"The first person who betrayed the trust was someone from Evelyn’s own family."

Amelia froze.

Her own family.

Again.

The same warning.

The same mystery.

Someone in the Escalante family had started everything.

Before they could investigate further, the mansion alarm suddenly activated.

Everyone turned.

A security officer rushed inside.

“Someone entered the property.”

Daniel immediately stood.

“Who?”

The officer handed him a tablet.

“The cameras captured the person.”

They watched the footage.

A figure walking through the mansion.

Entering the office.

Searching through files.

Then leaving.

Amelia stared.

Because she recognized the person.

Nathan looked shocked.

“No.”

Gabriel’s expression became serious.

“Impossible.”

The person in the footage was someone they thought was helping them.

Someone who had been trusted.

Someone who knew every secret they had uncovered.

The camera zoomed in.

And the identity became clear.

It was Alexander Whitmore.

The room went silent.

Nathan looked at Amelia.

“Why would he do this?”

Amelia didn’t answer.

Because she remembered her mother’s warning.

"The person closest to you may be the one who knows the most."

Maybe they had been looking in the wrong direction.

Maybe Alexander was not another victim.

Maybe he was the final player in the game.

Then Daniel received another alert.

A new transfer request.

The account name appeared on the screen.

Alexander Whitmore.

And beneath it…

A second authorization.

Evelyn Escalante.

Amelia felt her heart stop.

Her mother’s name.

Used in a transaction years after her death.

Someone was not only stealing money.

May you like

Someone was using the dead to continue the deception.

To be continued…
