Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Erased From History

Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Erased From History
The anonymous phone call replayed in Amelia’s mind all night.
"You found the first secret."
"But you haven’t found the one that will destroy you."
The words felt less like a threat and more like a warning.

Someone wanted her to stop.
Someone was afraid.
And that meant her mother had been right.
The truth was dangerous.
The next morning, Amelia sat at the kitchen table inside the riverfront apartment, surrounded by documents, photographs, and her mother’s journal.
She had barely slept.
Every page revealed another piece of a story that had been hidden for decades.
Nathan sat across from her.
For once, neither of them knew what to say.
Their marriage was broken.
Their trust was damaged.
But they were connected by something bigger than their personal pain.
The truth.
“I keep thinking about him,” Nathan finally said.
Amelia looked up.
“Richard?”
Nathan nodded.
“My real father.”
His voice sounded strange.
Like he was talking about a stranger.
“Thirty-three years of my life, I believed one story.”
He looked at the journal.
“And now I find out my entire identity was rewritten.”
Amelia softened slightly.
“That doesn’t erase who you are.”
Nathan gave a small, bitter smile.
“Doesn’t it?”
“No.”
She looked directly at him.
“The choices you make are who you are.”
Nathan looked away.
For years, he had used his family name as an excuse.
The Grant name.
The Grant power.
The Grant reputation.
But now he wondered if he had spent his entire life protecting a lie.
Daniel arrived shortly after with new information.
“We found records on Richard Grant.”
Nathan immediately stood.
“What did you find?”
Daniel placed a file on the table.
“Richard Grant was the oldest son of Alexander Grant, the founder of the original family company.”
Nathan frowned.
“My grandfather’s son?”
“Yes.”
“But everyone told me my father was the only heir.”
Daniel nodded.
“That was the official story.”
Amelia opened the file.
Inside were old newspaper articles.
Business reports.
Family photographs.
Then she saw something strange.
A photo of Richard standing beside Amelia’s grandfather.
The two men looked close.
Almost like brothers.
“Why was he erased?” Amelia asked.
Daniel took a breath.
“Because Richard discovered something.”
Nathan looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel opened another document.
“Financial fraud within the family empire.”
The room went quiet.
“Richard discovered that company funds were being redirected through private accounts.”
Nathan looked shocked.
“By who?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
Everyone already knew.
Victoria.
The evidence painted a disturbing picture.
Years ago, Richard Grant had attempted to expose financial corruption inside the family.
He had planned to reveal everything.
But before he could…
He disappeared.
Officially, Richard had left the country.
Officially, he abandoned the family.
Officially, he wanted nothing to do with the Grants.
But Amelia’s mother’s journal told a different story.
She had written:
"Richard did not leave. He was forced out."
Nathan read the sentence repeatedly.
“My father was removed.”
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother believed so.”
Nathan looked at Amelia.
“Your mother knew my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Amelia turned another page.
The answer was there.
Her mother and Richard had worked together.
They were trying to expose Victoria.
But they failed.
That afternoon, they traveled to an old private cemetery outside the city.
Daniel had discovered a hidden record connected to Richard’s name.
A burial record.
Nathan followed silently.
He didn’t know what he expected to find.
Maybe answers.
Maybe closure.
Maybe proof that his father existed.
They stopped in front of a simple stone.
No large monument.
No family name.
Just a small engraving.
Richard Alexander Grant
Nathan stared.
“He was here all this time?”
Daniel nodded.
“Your family never acknowledged the burial.”
Nathan stepped closer.
His fingers touched the stone.
A thousand emotions crossed his face.
Anger.
Confusion.
Sadness.
“I spent my entire life thinking he abandoned me.”
Amelia stood beside him.
“He didn’t.”
Nathan looked at the grave.
“He was erased.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small metal plate attached to the back of the stone.
“That wasn’t here originally.”
They carefully removed it.
Behind it was another hidden compartment.
Inside was a letter.
Addressed to Nathan.
Nathan froze.
“My name.”
Daniel handed it to him.
The handwriting was old.
But clear.
Nathan opened it.
The first line made him stop.
"My son, if you are reading this, then Victoria failed to destroy the truth."
Nathan closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he couldn’t continue.
Then he read.
"I never abandoned you. I was forced away because I discovered what they were doing."
His hands trembled.
"Your mother wants the world to believe I was gone. But the truth is, she was afraid you would learn who you really are."
Nathan looked at Amelia.
The same question was in both their minds.
Who was "your mother"?
Victoria?
Or someone else?
Nathan continued reading.
"The person who raised you is not the only person who lied to you."
A cold feeling moved through Amelia.
There was another secret.
The letter continued.
"Your birth records were changed because your bloodline gives you legal claim to the Escalante-Grant Trust."
Nathan looked confused.
“But why?”
Daniel answered.
“Because the trust was designed to protect descendants of both families.”
Nathan looked at Amelia.
“And I’m one of them.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
The letter had one final paragraph.
"Nathan, trust Amelia. Her mother sacrificed everything to protect the truth. The enemy is not the person searching for answers. The enemy is the person who benefits from silence."
Nathan lowered the letter.
For the first time, he looked at Amelia differently.
Not as his wife.
Not as someone who challenged him.
But as someone who had been fighting the same battle for years without knowing it.
That evening, they returned to the mansion.
But something had changed.
The power inside the house was different.
Victoria was no longer in control.
The investigators had discovered hidden accounts.
The company headquarters were being reviewed.
The family empire was under investigation.
Yet Victoria still remained calm.
Too calm.
Amelia noticed.
“You’re not worried.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You think you understand everything now.”
“No.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“I know there is still something you haven’t told us.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“You sound like your mother.”
Amelia froze.
“What does that mean?”
Victoria looked toward the window.
“Your mother was always searching.”
“For what?”
Victoria turned back.
“For the person who started all of this.”
The room became silent.
Nathan stepped forward.
“You mean there is someone else?”
Victoria didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward an old family portrait.
She touched the frame.
“There is a reason Richard was erased.”
Amelia watched carefully.
“Why?”
Victoria looked at them.
“Because Richard was not the only heir.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
Victoria whispered:
“He had a twin brother.”
Nobody moved.
A secret brother.
A hidden heir.
Another person connected to the empire.
Another person who had a reason to destroy the truth.
Then Victoria said the words that changed everything:
May you like
“And that brother is still alive.”
To be continued…
