Chapter 9 - A Mother's Order.

Claire played the final ten seconds again.

Then again.

Each time Eleanor's voice sounded clearer.

Do not call anyone until I get there.

Serena stood behind Claire with both hands pressed against her mouth.

Miriam removed her glasses and sat down.

"I never knew there was audio from the crash."

Claire could barely speak.

"Julian was there."

Serena nodded slowly.

"He never told me."

Claire remembered seventeen years of memorial dinners.

Julian had stood beside Eleanor at every one.

He had toasted their father's memory.

He had watched Claire cry.

He had never once said that he had been inside the car.

"How did nobody know?"

Miriam pointed to a scanned insurance file on the flash drive.

The official passenger section listed Thomas as the sole occupant.

Claire opened another document.

A private medical invoice showed treatment for an eighteen-year-old male with a fractured wrist and facial lacerations on the same morning.

The clinic name was outside the city.

The patient name was blank.

The guarantor was Eleanor Vale.

Claire felt sick.

Serena sat beside her.

"He was injured."

"He was also old enough to call an ambulance."

Claire's voice broke despite her effort to control it.

"Dad was alive."

Miriam leaned forward.

"We do not know how long."

Claire looked at the recording timer.

"Long enough to ask for help."

Her phone rang.

Martin Hale.

She answered without greeting him.

"Where was Julian at 8:43 on October seventeenth?"

Hale went silent.

Claire closed her eyes.

"Do not lie to me."

"He was with Thomas."

The admission landed like a second crash.

Hale explained that Thomas had picked Julian up that morning because he planned to tell him about Eleanor's fraud before the board meeting.

The car failed on Ridgeway Pass.

A private Vale security vehicle reached the scene before emergency services.

Eleanor arrived eleven minutes later.

"And Dad?"

Hale's voice became rough.

"Alive when she arrived."

Claire stood abruptly.

"How do you know?"

"Because Julian told me three days later."

Serena looked up sharply.

Claire gripped the phone.

"What did Eleanor do?"

"Julian said she took his phone."

"She told security that Thomas was already dead."

"Then she had Julian removed before the police arrived."

Claire felt fury rising so quickly that she had to lean against the table.

"Why did you stay silent?"

Hale did not defend himself.

"Fear."

"And cowardice."

"I told myself I was protecting you and Julian from scandal."

"I was really protecting myself."

Claire looked through the glass wall at Evelyn sitting with a bank employee in the waiting area.

Her daughter was drawing on a sheet of paper.

Seventeen years earlier, Claire had been only eleven years older than Evelyn was now.

Adults had made decisions around her and called their silence protection.

Claire would not repeat it.

"I am taking everything to the police."

Hale exhaled.

"Then do it fast."

"Why?"

"Because Eleanor just called an emergency board meeting for noon."

Claire glanced at the time.

They had less than three hours.

Hale continued.

"She is proposing a vote to remove you permanently from the Vale family trust."

"On what grounds?"

There was another pause.

"She says your behavior at the wedding proves you are dangerous."

Claire almost smiled.

"Then she has made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

Claire looked toward Evelyn.

"She turned the ballroom into a room full of witnesses."

At that exact moment, Serena's phone vibrated.

A video had been posted online.

It showed Claire slapping Julian.

It did not show him pushing Evelyn.
