Chapter 15 - The Offer.

Diane agreed to meet at the police station.

She arrived carrying a dented metal toolbox that looked old enough to have survived the entire Vale family history.

Inside, wrapped in oil-stained cloth, was a small brass pressure fitting.

She also carried photocopies of the original work order and her termination notice.

The detective accepted everything into evidence.

For the first time since the wedding, Claire felt the story moving somewhere Eleanor could not control.

Then Eleanor made another move.

A courier arrived at the station with an envelope addressed to Claire.

Inside was a settlement proposal prepared by Vale family counsel.

Eleanor offered Claire twenty-five million dollars.

The conditions filled six pages.

Claire would surrender all claims to the family trust.

She would return the contents of B-17.

She would state publicly that the ballroom confrontation resulted from stress and misunderstanding.

She would withdraw support for any investigation into Thomas's death.

She would also agree that Evelyn had "misinterpreted accidental physical contact" with Julian.

Claire stared at that final sentence longer than the dollar amount.

Serena read it over her shoulder.

"She wants you to make Evelyn doubt herself."

Claire folded the document once.

"That is how she has survived this long."

She handed the offer to the detective.

"Please add this to the file."

An hour later, Claire returned to Evelyn.

Her daughter sat at a small table drawing the ballroom.

The picture showed a giant chandelier, a blue figure, a white figure, and a red figure standing near broken flowers.

Claire sat beside her.

"Who is this?"

Evelyn pointed to the red figure.

"Uncle Julian."

Then she pointed to a black square behind him.

"And that is the little door."

Claire frowned.

"What little door?"

"The one behind the mirror."

Serena, who had just entered the room, stopped walking.

"What mirror?"

Evelyn described the ornate gold mirror beside the wedding display.

Before Julian hid the B-17 key, she had seen him open a narrow panel behind it.

He took a brown envelope from inside.

Then someone called his name.

He shoved the envelope back through the panel and moved the key behind the photograph.

Claire remembered the ballroom layout.

The wall behind that mirror bordered an old private archive room built into the original hotel structure.

The Vale Foundation leased it permanently for documents used during annual galas.

Serena searched the venue plan on her phone.

"There is no door marked there."

Claire called Noah.

He reviewed his photographs from earlier that evening.

One image showed Julian near the mirror before guests arrived.

Another showed Victor standing beside him.

A third captured the mirror slightly pulled away from the wall.

Claire zoomed in.

Behind the frame was a narrow steel compartment.

Something brown was visible inside.

The detective obtained permission from hotel management to inspect the hidden compartment.

Claire was not allowed to enter while officers searched it.

She waited in the lobby with Serena and Evelyn.

Forty minutes passed.

Then the detective returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a brown envelope.

Claire could see Thomas Vale's handwriting through the plastic.

TO CLAIRE ONLY.

The detective turned the envelope over.

The back had been sliced open recently.

Whatever Thomas had placed inside was gone.

But one torn piece of paper remained stuck beneath the flap.

It contained four handwritten words.

THE ORIGINAL IS AT HOME.
