Chapter 7 - The Evidence They Wanted Buried.

Claire remained inside the vault room while Miriam spoke to the officers outside.
Her first instinct was to hide the contents of B-17.
Her second was to remember what years of family secrecy had already cost.
She opened the leather folder instead.
The first document was a trust agreement signed by Thomas Vale.
Claire read the first page twice.
Thomas had placed forty-one percent of Vale Holdings into a protected trust.
The shares were supposed to transfer equally to Claire and Julian when they turned thirty.
That had never happened.
Claire had been told those shares were sold to cover her father's debts.
The next document proved otherwise.
Eleanor had petitioned to control the trust after Thomas died.
Attached to the petition was a statement claiming Claire was mentally unstable and financially irresponsible.
Claire had been eighteen.
She had never seen the document.
Her signature appeared at the bottom anyway.
It was forged.
The third page carried Julian's signature as a witness.
Claire stared at it until the letters blurred.
He had been eighteen too.
That did not make the betrayal smaller.
It only made it more complicated.
The red notebook contained handwritten dates, account numbers, and short observations in Thomas's careful script.
One entry was underlined three times.
ELEANOR HAS STARTED USING J'S AUTHORIZATION TOKEN WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE.
Another entry came two days later.
CLAIRE HEARD US ARGUE.
SHE THINKS THIS IS ABOUT MONEY.
I PRAY SHE NEVER LEARNS IT IS ABOUT SURVIVAL.
Claire turned the page.
The next entry was dated the night before Thomas died.
BRAKES FELT WRONG AFTER CAR RETURNED FROM SERVICE.
CALL MARTIN TOMORROW.
DO NOT DRIVE.
Claire's skin turned cold.
Thomas had died the next morning when his car left a mountain road.
The official report blamed rain and excessive speed.
Claire opened one of the sealed envelopes.
It contained copies of service invoices from Vale Motor Works.
One line showed a brake inspection requested by Eleanor's executive assistant.
Another line showed the vehicle returned to Thomas without final technician approval.
Claire heard voices outside the room.
One officer said they had a warrant to recover stolen property.
Miriam answered that the key was part of a private estate matter.
Claire opened the second envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Thomas.
My Claire,
If this reaches you, then the truth outlived me.
Your mother believes power can turn lies into history.
She has used Julian because he wants her approval more than he wants to know what she is doing.
Do not hate him before you learn what he knew.
But do not trust him until he tells you himself.
Claire had to stop reading.
A knock sounded against the vault door.
"Ms. Reed," an officer called.
"We need you to step outside."
Claire placed the documents back into the folder but kept Thomas's letter in her hand.
When she emerged, two uniformed officers waited with Miriam.
A third person stood behind them.
Julian.
He had changed out of his tuxedo.
He wore a charcoal suit and a dark bruise of exhaustion under both eyes.
"That box belongs to the Vale estate," he said.
Miriam corrected him immediately.
"The box belongs to Claire Reed."
Julian ignored her.
"She assaulted me last night and stole a restricted key."
Claire held up Thomas's letter.
"Dad left it to me."
For a moment Julian looked genuinely wounded.
Then he whispered something Claire did not expect.
"You should have left him buried."
Claire's anger surged.
"Why?"
May you like
Julian's eyes shifted toward the red notebook inside the folder.
"Because if you read the last pages, you are going to find out why I never called for help."
