Chapter 6 - Before the Bank Opened.

Claire did not sleep.

She sat beside the hotel window until dawn turned the river from black to gray.

Evelyn finally fell asleep curled against two pillows with Claire's coat tucked around her.

Serena sat in an armchair across the room, still wearing her wedding dress under a borrowed hotel robe.

Martin Hale had left through a service exit shortly after midnight.

Before leaving, he made Claire promise not to contact Armitage Bank from her own phone.

"Someone inside has been feeding Julian information," he warned.

At six thirty, Claire received a message from Hale containing one name.

Miriam Cross.

She was the senior vault director at Armitage.

According to Hale, Miriam had worked there when Thomas Vale opened B-17.

Claire called from the hotel's landline.

A woman answered on the second ring.

"Ms. Reed, I have been expecting you for seventeen years."

Claire stopped breathing for a moment.

"Then you know about B-17."

"I know enough to tell you not to enter through the front door."

Miriam instructed them to arrive before public opening and use the staff entrance beneath the east parking deck.

Claire woke Evelyn and helped her into the clean clothes Serena had ordered from the hotel shop.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

"Are we still in trouble?"

Claire knelt in front of her.

"You are not in trouble at all."

"You told the truth."

Evelyn studied her mother's face.

"Is Uncle Julian bad?"

Claire wanted to give her a simple answer.

Nothing about Julian felt simple anymore.

"He did something bad to you."

"And I am going to make sure he cannot do it again."

Serena drove because Claire's SUV could be tracked through the Vale security network.

They reached Armitage at seven fifteen.

Miriam Cross met them beside an unmarked steel door.

She was a tall Black woman in her late fifties with silver-rimmed glasses and a voice that never rose above conversational volume.

She checked Claire's identification three times.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"Your grandfather came here with the same eyes."

Claire felt a pressure behind her ribs.

They descended two levels into a vault corridor lined with polished stone.

Miriam stopped before a private room.

"There is something you need to understand before I open the outer compartment."

Claire waited.

"Your father did not trust the bank completely."

"He designed B-17 to require both the physical key and a handwritten phrase."

Claire stared at her.

"I do not know the phrase."

Miriam reached beneath the desk and slid forward an envelope yellowed with age.

Claire's name was written across it in Thomas Vale's handwriting.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Claire read the sentence aloud.

"The truth belongs to the child who was never believed."

Miriam nodded slowly.

"That is the phrase."

Claire looked at Evelyn.

The words suddenly felt less like a password and more like a warning from the past.

The vault door opened.

Miriam led Claire inside alone.

Box B-17 was larger than Claire expected.

She inserted the brass key.

The lock turned smoothly.

Inside sat a leather folder, two sealed envelopes, a flash drive, and a small red notebook.

On top was a photograph of Claire at seven years old.

She was standing beside Thomas at a summer picnic.

On the back, he had written one line.

CLAIRE, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I FAILED TO PROTECT YOU FROM HER.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then an alarm sounded outside the vault.

Miriam shouted through the door.

"Do not come out."

Claire grabbed the folder.

A man's voice echoed down the corridor.

"Police."

May you like

"Claire Reed, stay where you are."

Julian had reported the B-17 key stolen.
