Chapter 1 - The Ballroom Went Silent.

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom seemed to burn brighter the moment Evelyn screamed.

White roses trembled in tall glass vases while three hundred guests turned toward the sound.

Evelyn stood beside a collapsed display of crystal swans and gold-framed wedding photographs.

Her small white lace dress was streaked with dust from the marble floor.

Julian Vale towered over her in his maroon velvet tuxedo jacket.

His jaw was tight.

His hand was still half raised from where he had shoved the seven-year-old away from the display.

"You destroyed it," Julian said.

Evelyn shook her head so hard that her ponytail struck her cheek.

"I didn't."

Julian glanced toward the gathering crowd.

The anger on his face changed instantly into controlled embarrassment.

"Do not lie to me in front of my guests."

Evelyn's lower lip trembled.

Then she saw her mother near the dance floor.

"Mommy!"

Claire Reed turned so fast that the champagne flute in her hand tipped against her fingers.

She saw Evelyn running toward her.

She also saw the red mark beginning to form around her daughter's wrist.

Claire dropped the glass onto a passing tray and caught Evelyn against her blue satin gown.

"What happened?"

Evelyn buried her face against Claire's shoulder.

"He pushed me, Mommy."

Claire lifted her eyes toward Julian.

For one second, her expression contained only disbelief.

Then Julian stepped forward.

"She knocked over the display and panicked."

Evelyn turned inside Claire's arms and pointed at him.

"No."

"He pushed me because I saw him put something under it."

A murmur passed through the guests.

Julian's face changed again.

This time Claire saw fear.

Eleanor Vale sat several yards away in a gold-trimmed chair near the head table.

The sixty-five-year-old matriarch did not rise.

She did not ask if Evelyn was hurt.

She simply lifted her chin and looked at Claire with open irritation.

"Stop this before it becomes more embarrassing than it already is."

Claire stared at her mother.

"My daughter says Julian pushed her."

Eleanor's mouth hardened.

"Children exaggerate."

Evelyn clung more tightly to Claire.

Julian gave a small, humorless laugh.

"Exactly."

"She broke something expensive, got scared, and invented a story."

Claire slowly moved Evelyn behind her.

"Show me your hands."

Julian blinked.

"What?"

"If you did not touch her, show me your hands and tell me why her wrist is red."

The guests nearest them stopped whispering.

Julian looked at Evelyn.

His expression sharpened.

"She needs discipline, Claire."

Claire took one step forward.

"She is seven."

Julian lowered his voice.

"And she needs to learn what happens when she lies."

The slap cracked across the ballroom before anyone realized Claire had moved.

Julian's head snapped to the side.

A woman near the orchestra gasped.

The quartet stopped playing in the middle of a note.

Claire's hand remained raised for half a second.

Then she pointed directly at her brother.

"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."

Julian slowly turned back toward her.

His cheek was bright red.

The humiliation in his eyes was worse than anger.

"Security," he said.

Two men in black suits started toward Claire.

Eleanor finally stood.

"Remove her."

Claire did not move.

Instead, Evelyn tugged urgently at the back of her gown.

"Mommy."

Claire looked down.

Evelyn opened her small fist.

Resting in her palm was a brass key covered in white dust from the shattered display.

"This fell out when he pushed me," she whispered.

Julian saw it.

Every trace of rage disappeared from his face.

"Give me that key."
