Chapter 2 - The Key Beneath the Roses.

Claire closed her fingers around Evelyn's hand before Julian could take another step.
"Back away from her."
Julian stopped.
The security guards hesitated because the command in Claire's voice sounded stronger than his.
Eleanor crossed the marble floor with measured steps.
Her gold sequin dress caught the chandelier light like armor.
"Claire, give Julian whatever the child picked up."
Claire looked from her mother to her brother.
"Why?"
Eleanor's expression stayed perfectly calm.
"Because this is his wedding."
"That is not an answer."
Julian held out his hand.
"It is a storage key."
Claire examined the small brass tag attached to it.
There was no storage company name.
There were only three stamped characters.
B-17.
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
"He put it inside the picture frame."
Julian's shoulders stiffened.
"Evelyn."
The child's eyes widened at the warning in his voice.
Claire stepped directly between them.
"Do not say her name like that."
A photographer lowered his camera but did not leave.
Several guests had already taken out their phones.
Julian noticed them.
"Everyone needs to return to the reception."
Nobody moved.
The bride, Serena Caldwell, appeared at the edge of the crowd in a pearl-covered wedding gown.
Her face was pale.
"Julian, what is going on?"
He immediately softened his voice.
"Nothing."
"Claire is upset because Evelyn broke the display."
Serena looked at the child's wrist.
Then she looked at Julian.
"Did you grab her?"
"Of course not."
Evelyn whispered into Claire's side.
"He did."
Serena heard her.
Julian's lips pressed together.
Eleanor stepped closer to the bride.
"This is a family misunderstanding."
Claire almost laughed.
"You always call it a misunderstanding when Julian is the one who did it."
The words landed harder than the slap.
Eleanor's eyes turned cold.
"Do not bring old grievances into this room."
Claire looked at the key again.
For seventeen years, she had been told that her father died after making reckless investments that nearly destroyed the Vale family company.
For seventeen years, Eleanor had insisted that Julian saved what remained.
For seventeen years, Claire had lived with the knowledge that her inheritance vanished with those debts.
B-17 meant nothing to her.
Yet Julian looked at that key as though it could destroy him.
Claire slipped it into the hidden pocket of her gown.
"We are leaving."
Julian moved to block her.
"Not with that."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"Try to stop me."
Serena touched Julian's arm.
"Let them go."
He pulled away from her too quickly.
The gesture was small.
Claire saw it anyway.
So did Serena.
Eleanor lowered her voice.
"Claire, think carefully."
"You have already embarrassed this family enough tonight."
Claire looked down at Evelyn.
"Can you walk?"
Evelyn nodded.
They started toward the ballroom doors.
A waiter stepped aside.
A guest whispered Claire's name.
Then every chandelier in the ballroom went dark.
Someone screamed.
Claire grabbed Evelyn and dropped to one knee.
In the darkness, shoes scraped against marble.
A body moved fast beside her.
A hand reached into the pocket of her blue gown.
Claire caught the wrist.
"Let go," a man whispered.
She recognized Julian's voice.
Then another voice came from the darkness behind him.
May you like
"Do not let him get that key."
It was Serena.
