Chapter 8 - The Call He Never Made.

Claire forgot the police were standing beside them.

"What do you mean you never called for help?"

Julian's face tightened.

Miriam stepped between them before he could answer.

"This conversation is not happening in my vault corridor."

One of the officers cleared his throat.

He explained that Julian had reported the key stolen from private property.

Miriam produced the original deposit agreement showing the key was legally assigned to Thomas and then to Claire.

The officer read it carefully.

His posture changed.

"Mr. Vale, this looks like a civil matter."

Julian stared at him.

"She hit me in front of hundreds of witnesses."

"You are free to file an assault complaint."

Claire did not flinch.

"Do it."

Julian looked at her with something close to disbelief.

"You think this makes you brave?"

"No."

"Protecting Evelyn makes me her mother."

At the mention of Evelyn's name, Julian's face softened for a fraction of a second.

Claire hated that she noticed.

"I did not mean to hurt her," he said.

"You pushed a seven-year-old hard enough to leave a mark."

"She surprised me."

"That is not an excuse."

The officers escorted Julian back toward the public area.

Before leaving, he turned.

"Ask Hale about October seventeenth."

Claire froze.

October seventeenth was the day Thomas died.

Julian continued.

"Ask him where I was at 8:43 that morning."

Then he walked away.

Claire returned to the private room and inserted the flash drive into Miriam's secure laptop.

It contained scanned documents and three audio files.

The first recording was the argument Hale had played at the hotel.

The second was longer.

Thomas accused Eleanor of draining the family foundation and disguising the transfers as overseas relief grants.

Eleanor denied nothing.

She only asked what Thomas planned to do.

"I am taking this to the board and the police."

"And Julian?"

Thomas's answer came without hesitation.

"I am telling him the truth before you sacrifice him for what you did."

There was a long silence on the recording.

Then Eleanor spoke.

"He will choose me."

Thomas replied quietly.

"That is what frightens me."

The second recording ended.

Claire opened the third file.

At first there was only wind and road noise.

Then Thomas's voice came through, strained and breathless.

"Martin, something is wrong with the car."

Claire gripped the table.

Thomas was making a call while driving.

"The brake pedal is dropping."

The sound of a horn blared.

Thomas cursed.

"If this disconnects, call the police."

Then another voice sounded inside the car.

A young male voice.

"Dad, slow down."

Claire's entire body went cold.

Julian had been in the car.

Thomas shouted his name.

Tires screamed.

The recording exploded into static.

Then silence.

Claire could hear her own breathing in the bank room.

The file continued.

Several seconds later came groaning metal.

Thomas was alive.

"Julian."

The young voice answered weakly.

"I'm here."

Thomas whispered.

"Call 911."

There was a pause.

Then another voice came through Julian's phone speaker.

Eleanor's voice.

May you like

"Do not call anyone until I get there."

The file ended.
