Chapter 5 - The Man in the Gray Coat.

Claire drove past her own street without slowing down.

Evelyn noticed.

"Aren't we going home?"

Claire forced her voice to stay calm.

"Not tonight, honey."

Serena searched for a hotel under a different name.

Every luxury hotel near downtown felt too obvious.

They chose a small boutique hotel near the river where no Vale family event had ever been held.

Claire parked in an underground garage and kept the brass key in her hand.

As they walked toward the elevator, a man in a gray coat stepped from behind a concrete pillar.

Claire immediately pulled Evelyn behind her.

The man raised both hands.

He was in his early seventies with thinning white hair and tired eyes.

"Claire Vale?"

"Claire Reed."

The correction came automatically.

The man gave a sad nod.

"You look like your father when you are angry."

Serena whispered beside her.

"Martin Hale."

Claire stared at the retired attorney.

"You have been meeting with Julian."

Hale looked toward the garage entrance.

"Because he has been trying to find out what I know."

"And what do you know?"

Hale's face tightened.

"Enough to be ashamed that I stayed silent."

Claire wanted to demand every answer at once.

Instead, she looked down at Evelyn.

"Not here."

They went upstairs to a quiet corner of the hotel lobby.

Evelyn sat beside Claire with a cup of warm milk she barely touched.

Hale kept his voice low.

"Your father did not bankrupt Vale Holdings."

Claire felt as though the room had tilted.

"Then who did?"

Hale looked at Serena before answering.

"Your mother moved company money into private entities she controlled."

Claire closed her eyes.

She had expected something terrible.

Hearing it still hurt.

"Why would my father take the blame?"

"He did not."

Hale reached inside his coat and placed an old cassette recorder on the table.

"He was preparing to expose her."

Claire stared at the device.

"What is that?"

"A copy of a recording Thomas made."

"I thought the original was destroyed."

Serena leaned forward.

"What recording?"

Hale pressed play.

Static filled the tiny speaker.

Then Claire heard a man's voice she had not heard since she was eighteen.

Her father's voice.

"Eleanor, the transfers stop tonight."

A woman's voice answered.

"You have no idea what you are threatening."

Claire's hand flew to her mouth.

The recording continued.

Thomas accused Eleanor of moving millions through charitable accounts.

Eleanor warned him that exposing her would destroy both children.

Then Thomas said something Claire could barely process.

"Julian already signed documents he never read."

"You used our son as your shield."

The recording cut off.

Claire stared at Hale.

"Why does it stop there?"

"Because the rest is in B-17."

He looked at the brass key in her hand.

"Along with the documents that prove what happened after that argument."

Claire's voice became a whisper.

"After?"

Hale nodded.

"Your father's death was ruled an accident."

"I never believed it was."

Evelyn looked up from her warm milk.

"Mommy?"

Claire took her hand.

Hale leaned closer.

"Julian found out about B-17 last year."

"But the bank would not open it for him."

"Why not?"

Hale looked directly at Claire.

"Because Thomas named only one person who could claim the box after his death."

May you like

Claire already knew the answer before he said it.

"You."
