Chapter 6 - The Breakfast Table

Ellie wandered into the massive kitchen rubbing her sleepy eyes.

She was holding a worn-out stuffed bunny by its ear.

Evan was standing at the stove flipping pancakes.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored suit jacket over an apron.

"Good morning, princess," Evan said cheerfully.

Ellie stopped and stared at him in wonder.

"Are you really my daddy?" she asked again.

Evan turned off the stove and knelt down to her eye level.

"I sure am," Evan replied softly.

"And I am going to make you pancakes every single morning," he promised.

Ellie giggled and ran into his arms.

Evan hugged her tightly, breathing in the scent of her strawberry shampoo.

He felt a piece of his soul click into place.

Leah walked into the kitchen and smiled at the scene.

Her heart swelled with a mixture of joy and regret.

She realized how much Evan had missed out on.

"Breakfast smells amazing," Leah commented.

Evan pulled out a chair for her like a true gentleman.

"Only the best for my girls," Evan said smoothly.

They sat together at the large marble dining table.

For the first time, they felt like a real family.

Suddenly, Evan's cell phone buzzed loudly on the counter.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

Evan picked it up and read the screen.

His expression instantly darkened into a scowl.

"What is it?" Leah asked, her anxiety flaring up.

Evan locked his phone and put it in his pocket.

"Just a desperate woman making empty threats," he lied smoothly.

He didn't want to tell Leah that Sabrina had just sent a picture of the penthouse.

Sabrina was watching them.
