Chapter 3 - Handcuffs and Heartbreak

Two armed police officers rushed through the front door.
Their hands were resting cautiously on their holsters.
"Who called 911?" the taller officer demanded.
"I did," Evan answered calmly.
He pointed directly at Sabrina.
"That woman assaulted the mother of my child with a hockey stick," Evan stated.
The officers immediately moved toward Sabrina.
"Ma'am, put your hands behind your back," the second officer ordered.
Sabrina began to thrash and scream.
"Do you know who my father is?" she shrieked.
"You cannot arrest me!" she wailed.
The metal handcuffs clicked loudly around her wrists.
She was forcefully escorted out of the front door in tears.
Paramedics rushed into the kitchen seconds later.
They immediately knelt beside Leah on the floor.
Evan picked Ellie up and held her securely in his arms.
He watched nervously as they examined Leah’s shoulder.
"It looks like a severe fracture, possibly a shattered collarbone," the paramedic announced.
"We need to get her to the emergency room immediately," he added.
Leah tried to sit up but gasped in agonizing pain.
"What about Ellie?" Leah cried out in panic.
"She is coming with me," Evan said firmly.
He looked Leah straight in the eyes.
"I am following the ambulance to the hospital," he assured her.
"You do not have to worry about anything anymore," he promised.
Leah nodded weakly as they loaded her onto the stretcher.
Evan walked out to his SUV with Ellie resting against his chest.
The little girl felt incredibly light in his arms.
He strapped her safely into the back seat.
His mind was racing with a million different thoughts.
He had a four-year-old daughter.
The woman he had loved years ago was living right under his nose.
His vicious fiancée had just tried to hurt them both.
Evan started the engine of his car.

He followed the flashing lights of the ambulance into the dark night.
He knew his life would never be the same again.
