Chapter 2 - The Sound of Sirens

Evan’s fingers trembled slightly as he pulled his phone from his pocket.
He did not break eye contact with Sabrina for a single second.
The emergency operator answered on the second ring.
"I need police and an ambulance immediately," Evan said.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
"My home has been broken into, and a woman was assaulted with a weapon in front of a child," he continued.
Sabrina’s eyes widened in sudden panic.
"Evan, you cannot be serious," she stammered.
"You are going to ruin my life over this trash?" she yelled.
Evan ignored her completely.
He gave the operator his address in the exclusive gated community.
He confirmed that the attacker was still on the premises.
"Do not move," Evan told Sabrina after hanging up.
He pointed a warning finger at her.
"If you try to run, I will personally drag you back inside," he promised.
Sabrina dropped the hockey stick onto the hardwood floor with a loud clatter.
She took a shaky step backward.
"I am your fiancée, Evan," she pleaded.
"We are supposed to get married in three months," she reminded him.
"The wedding is off," Evan stated coldly.
He turned his back on her.
He focused his entire attention on Leah.
Leah was clutching her shoulder, her face pale and covered in a cold sweat.
Ellie was clinging to Evan’s pant leg.
The little girl was sobbing quietly into the fabric.
"It is going to be okay, sweetie," Evan whispered.
He gently stroked Ellie’s hair.
"Daddy is here now," he said.
The words felt strange but entirely right on his tongue.
Leah looked up at him through tear-filled eyes.
"She just snapped, Evan," Leah choked out.
"She found out I was living in the guest house and came barging in," she explained.
"She started screaming that I was trying to steal you," Leah added.
Evan felt a surge of pure rage.
He realized Sabrina had known about Ellie before he did.
She had come here to silence them.
The wail of sirens pierced the quiet neighborhood.
Red and blue lights began flashing through the kitchen windows.
Sabrina let out a sob of genuine terror.
"Evan, please call them off," she begged.
"I will do anything," she cried.

Evan did not even look at her.
"Save it for the police," he replied.
