Chapter 5 - The War Begins

The morning sun filtered through the massive windows of Evan's penthouse.

He had insisted Leah and Ellie come stay in the main house.

The guest house was no longer safe.

His lawyer called him at exactly eight in the morning.

"Sabrina made bail," the lawyer announced.

"Her father hired the best defense team in the state," he warned.

Evan stared out at the city skyline.

"I want a restraining order filed immediately," Evan ordered.

"She is not to come within five hundred yards of Leah or Ellie," he demanded.

"Done," the lawyer agreed.

"But you should know, her family is threatening a massive lawsuit," he added.

"They claim you breached the marriage contract," the lawyer explained.

Evan let out a dark, bitter laugh.

"Let them try," Evan said dangerously.

"I have the security footage from the kitchen," he revealed.

"I have her on high-definition video assaulting Leah," he stated.

The lawyer paused on the other end of the line.

"That changes everything," the lawyer admitted.

"File the paternity paperwork as well," Evan commanded.

"I want my name on Ellie's birth certificate by the end of the week," he said.

Evan ended the call and turned around.

Leah was standing in the doorway of the master bedroom.

She looked small and fragile in one of Evan's oversized dress shirts.

"Is she coming after us?" Leah asked nervously.

Evan walked over and gently cupped her face in his hands.

"Sabrina is going to prison," Evan promised.

"I will bankrupt her entire family if they try to protect her," he vowed.

Leah leaned into his touch.

It was the first time she had felt safe in years.

"What do we do now?" she whispered.

Evan smiled down at her.

"We make up for lost time," he answered.
