Chapter 8: The Interrogation

The mansion had become a labyrinth of terror for the invading squad. Within seven minutes, Evelyn had systematically dismantled their team. She dropped a heavy chandelier on two of them in the dining room, eliminated a third from the shadows of the library, and engaged the fourth in brutal, close-quarters combat in the kitchen, snapping his arm and rendering him unconscious before he could even fire a shot.
Only the squad leader remained.
He backed into the center of the foyer, his chest heaving, his assault rifle sweeping the darkness. He had lost communication with his men. The confident assault had turned into a slaughter.
"Show yourself!" he yelled, his heavy Russian accent betraying his panic.
"Looking for me?" a voice whispered directly behind him.
The leader spun around, swinging his rifle butt aimed at Evelyn's head. She ducked effortlessly beneath the heavy strike, driving her knee upward into his solar plexus. As he doubled over, gasping for air, Evelyn grabbed his wrist, twisting it violently until he dropped the rifle. She swept his legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the floor. Before he could recover, she had her boot planted firmly on his throat, the barrel of her 9mm pressed right between his eyes.
"Let's skip the part where you pretend you aren't going to talk," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with ice. "Who sent you, and what is on that drive?"
The man glared up at her, spitting blood onto the pristine marble floor. "You are dead, American. You have no idea who you stole from. Kestrel will burn this city to the ground to get that data."
Evelyn’s blood ran cold. Kestrel. The alias of Anton Kestrel, one of the most ruthless and elusive black-market arms dealers in Eastern Europe. The CIA had been hunting him for a decade.
"What is on the drive?" Evelyn pressed her boot down harder, cutting off his airway.
"Next-generation drone schematics," the mercenary gasped, his face turning purple. "Stolen from the Department of Defense. Unstoppable stealth tech. Kestrel paid fifty million for the hand-off tonight."
Evelyn stepped back, allowing the man to breathe just as the front doors swung open and Vance rushed in, followed by a dozen heavily armed private security contractors. They immediately secured the bleeding Russian mercenary.
"Status?" Vance asked, looking around the devastated foyer, a mixture of awe and exhaustion on his face.
"Six tangos, all neutralized," Evelyn said, holstering her weapon and smoothing down her hair. "The buyer is Kestrel, Vance. The drive holds stolen DOD drone tech. Julian wasn't just a courier; he handed a weapon of mass destruction directly to a global terrorist."
Vance cursed loudly. "If Kestrel is involved, he won't stop with one hit squad. We need to evacuate you and Lily to a safe house immediately."
"No," Evelyn replied, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the shattered remains of her front door. "If I run, Kestrel will hunt me forever. We go on the offensive. Get my car ready."

"Where are you going?" Vance demanded.
"To have a little chat with my ex-husband."
