Chapter 4: The Hidden Truth

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminated the night sky as Evelyn and Lily were escorted to the hotel's underground VIP garage. Julian had been dragged out of the lobby in handcuffs, screaming obscenities and threatening lawsuits that everyone knew he could no longer afford. Eleanor had collapsed into a chair, crying hysterically as auditors were called in to seize the charity’s records.

Evelyn strapped Lily into the backseat of her armored SUV, her heart finally beginning to slow down from the adrenaline spike. She climbed into the driver's seat, letting out a long, heavy exhale.

"Are you okay, baby?" Evelyn asked, looking at Lily through the rearview mirror.

Lily nodded slowly, her small hands clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit. "Mommy? Is that man going to jail?"

"Yes, honey. He did a very bad thing. But we are safe."

Evelyn started the engine, pulling out of the garage and merging onto the rain-slicked streets of the city. The city lights blurred as they drove toward their private estate in the hills. The confrontation had gone exactly as she had planned, yet something was still nagging at her. Julian was greedy and desperate, yes, but planting a fake brooch just to trigger a custody dispute felt unusually clumsy, even for him.

They arrived at the heavily gated compound an hour later. After putting a weary Lily to bed with a cup of warm milk and a bedtime story, Evelyn walked into her home office. The room was dark, illuminated only by the massive monitors displaying stock tickers, corporate hierarchies, and encrypted files.

She poured herself a glass of bourbon and sat at her desk, staring at the paused security footage from the gala she had transferred to her private server. She watched the moment Julian slipped the brooch into the bag again. And again.

Something wasn't right. Julian’s hands were shaking in the footage. Not with rage, but with terror.

Suddenly, her secure phone buzzed. It was her lead investigator, Vance.

"Evelyn," Vance's gruff voice came through the speaker. "We have a problem."

"Julian is in custody, Vance. What could possibly be a problem?"

"The police recovered the brooch from Eleanor’s bag and logged it into evidence. We got a guy on the inside to swap it for a decoy so we could analyze the zirconia replica, just like you asked."

"And?"

"Evelyn... it's not a replica. And it's not a diamond, either." Vance paused, taking a deep breath. "It's a military-grade encrypted storage drive, disguised as jewelry. And someone just tried to hack into our servers using its tracking signal."
