Chapter 1: The Fall of the High and Mighty

The grand ballroom of the Belmont Hotel plunged into a stunned, breathless silence. The only sound echoing across the marble floors was Julian’s ragged wheezing as he clutched his chest, writhing on the ground in his bespoke tuxedo. The elite attendees of the annual charity gala—billionaires, socialites, and politicians—stood frozen, their champagne flutes hovering midway to their mouths.

Evelyn stood over him, her posture immaculate, her breathing steady. She didn't look like a hysterical single mother; she looked like a queen who had just executed a traitor. She reached down and pulled six-year-old Lily behind her flowing emerald silk gown, shielding her daughter from the ugly spectacle.

"What on earth?!" Eleanor shrieked, her face turning an ungraceful shade of crimson as she dropped to her knees beside her son. "How dare you kick him! You vicious, ungrateful woman! Security! Security, get in here right now and arrest this lunatic!"

Three burly security guards in dark suits immediately shoved through the crowd of gaping onlookers, their hands reaching for their radios and handcuffs. They zeroed in on Evelyn, fully prepared to tackle her to the ground.

"Ma'am, you need to step back and put your hands behind your back," the lead guard ordered, stepping into Evelyn’s personal space.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She slowly lifted her chin, her piercing hazel eyes locking onto the guard. "If you lay a single finger on me, Roberts, you will be looking for a new line of work before midnight."

The guard paused, his eyes widening as he registered her face. He blinked, glancing down at her nametag, then back up at her, suddenly pale. He recognized the tone, and more importantly, he recognized the woman standing before him.

"Arrest her!" Julian gasped from the floor, his face purple as he struggled to sit up. "She assaulted me! She and that little brat stole the Starlight Diamond brooch! I want them locked up!"

Evelyn’s lips curled into a cold, terrifying smile. "Roberts," she said softly, her voice carrying through the silent ballroom. "Lock down the ballroom. No one leaves. And call Mr. Sterling down here immediately."

"Yes, ma'am," the guard stammered, immediately turning his back on Julian and pressing his earpiece. "Code Red. Lock the doors. Get the General Manager down to the main ballroom now."

Eleanor stared in absolute shock. "What is the meaning of this? Why are you taking orders from this nobody? She's just Julian's ex-secretary!"

"She might have been my secretary once, Mother," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the back of the room. The crowd parted like the Red Sea as an older, distinguished man with silver hair strode forward. It was Richard Belmont, the billionaire owner of the hotel chain.

He didn't look at Julian. He walked straight up to Evelyn and gave a deep, respectful bow. "Miss Thorne. I apologize for the disturbance in your hotel."

The collective gasp from the crowd sucked all the air out of the room.
