Chapter 2: The Illusions of Power

Julian’s face drained of color, his chest pain momentarily forgotten as he stared at the billionaire hotel mogul bowing to his former employee. "Your... your hotel?" Julian stammered, scrambling awkwardly to his feet, leaning heavily on his mother's arm. "Richard, have you lost your mind? Evelyn is destitute! She lives in a two-bedroom apartment!"
"I own the building that two-bedroom apartment is in, Julian," Evelyn said smoothly, stepping forward. "Just as I acquired the controlling shares of the Belmont Hotel Group three months ago. Mr. Belmont has kindly stayed on as a figurehead while I restructured the board. A board that your company, Julian, has been desperately trying to pitch for a contract."
Eleanor looked like she was about to faint. She grabbed her pearl necklace, her eyes darting frantically between Richard Belmont and Evelyn. "This... this is a trick. A scam! She's a gold-digger who tried to trap my son!"
"Trap your son?" Evelyn let out a short, hollow laugh. "Eleanor, I left Julian five years ago because he was bankrupting this family's legacy with his gambling debts. I built my own empire from the ground up." She crouched down, smoothing Lily's hair and whispering a soft, reassuring word to the trembling child, before standing back up with eyes like shattered glass. "And now, you accuse my six-year-old daughter of theft. You hit me. In front of her."
"The brooch is missing!" Julian yelled, desperately trying to claw back some semblance of control. "The Starlight Diamond is worth two million dollars! It was in my jacket pocket, the kid bumped into me, and now it's gone! Rich or not, a thief is a thief!"
Evelyn turned to the General Manager. "Mr. Sterling, pull up the security footage for this quadrant. Project it onto the main screens. Let’s see exactly how this two-million-dollar piece of jewelry vanished."
A few murmurs rippled through the crowd. Julian shifted uncomfortably, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple. "This is ridiculous. It's a blatant violation of privacy!"
"You made a public accusation, Julian," Evelyn replied coldly. "You wanted a spectacle. You're getting one."
Within seconds, the massive LED screens flanking the stage—previously displaying the charity's logo—flickered to life. The high-definition security camera footage showed the exact spot where Julian, Evelyn, and Lily had been standing ten minutes prior.
The room watched in silence as the digital Julian approached Evelyn. They saw the tense exchange of words. They saw little Lily hiding behind her mother's legs.
"Watch closely," Evelyn instructed the crowd.

On the screen, Julian reached into his own breast pocket. With a swift, practiced motion, he pulled out the sparkling diamond brooch. But he didn't drop it. He didn't lose it. As he aggressively stepped toward Evelyn, gesturing wildly with his hands to draw attention to their argument, he subtly slipped the brooch into the open handbag of the woman standing just behind him.
His own mother, Eleanor.
