Chapter 17: The Fall of the House of Sterling

The lobby of the Belmont Hotel was a masterpiece of modern luxury, filled with imported marble, crystal chandeliers, and the elite society of the city. For decades, Eleanor Sterling had glided through these spaces as if she owned them, commanding respect and demanding deference from the staff.
Today, however, she sat on a velvet bench near the entrance, looking entirely out of place.
Her designer clothes were wrinkled. The ostentatious jewelry she usually flaunted had been pawned to pay for her immediate legal fees. The IRS had frozen all of the Sterling family assets pending a massive federal investigation into the "Hope Foundation" charity fraud. With Julian incarcerated and their accounts locked, Eleanor was effectively destitute.
Evelyn descended the grand staircase, flanked by two towering security guards. She spotted Eleanor immediately but did not alter her stride.
"Evelyn! Evelyn, please wait!" Eleanor scrambled to her feet, her voice frantic, drawing the stares of several wealthy guests.
Evelyn paused, gesturing for her security to stand down, though they remained close. "Make it quick, Eleanor. I have a board meeting in ten minutes."
"You have to help me," Eleanor pleaded, tears of genuine desperation spilling down her meticulously contoured cheeks. "The bank foreclosed on the estate this morning. My credit cards are declining everywhere. I have nowhere to go. You have all this wealth, this power... we are family! For Lily's sake, you can't just leave me on the street!"
Evelyn looked at the older woman, feeling absolutely nothing. No pity, no anger. Just a cold, calculating detachment.
"Family?" Evelyn echoed softly, her voice carrying a lethal edge. "You stood by and watched your son berate me for years. You actively participated in framing your own six-year-old granddaughter for grand larceny just to secure a payday. You didn't care about Lily's sake when you were willing to let her be taken away by child services."
"I didn't know he planted the brooch!" Eleanor sobbed. "I swear it! Julian manipulated me too!"
"You always knew exactly what Julian was, Eleanor. You just chose to look the other way because he funded your lifestyle," Evelyn replied smoothly. She motioned to the General Manager, Mr. Sterling, who hurried over.
"Yes, Miss Thorne?"
"Mr. Sterling, please ensure Mrs. Sterling is escorted off the premises. She is permanently banned from all Belmont properties worldwide," Evelyn ordered without breaking eye contact with her former mother-in-law.
"Evelyn, you can't do this!" Eleanor shrieked as the security guards gently but firmly took her by the arms. "I am a Sterling! I built this society!"

"The Sterling name means nothing anymore, Eleanor," Evelyn said, turning her back on the crying woman. "Your era is over. Enjoy the reality you created."
Evelyn walked away, her heels clicking authoritatively against the marble floor. She didn't look back as Eleanor was escorted out the revolving glass doors, stepping out into the harsh, unforgiving city streets with absolutely nothing left to her name.
