Chapter 18: The Final Signature

The federal supermax penitentiary was a bleak fortress of concrete and steel, located miles away from civilization. It smelled of bleach, stale sweat, and utter despair. Evelyn sat in a small, windowless visitation room, separated from the inmate side by an impenetrable wall of reinforced plexiglass.
The heavy metal door on the other side buzzed open, and Julian shuffled into the booth. He was dressed in a faded orange jumpsuit, his hands heavily manacled. The arrogant, slick corporate heir was entirely gone. He had lost at least twenty pounds, his hair was thinning, and his eyes were hollow with terror. He had spent the last month in solitary confinement for his own protection, as Kestrel's reach extended deep into the prison system.
Julian picked up the black telephone receiver with shaking hands. Evelyn picked up hers, her expression utterly unreadable.
"Evelyn," Julian rasped, his voice cracking. "Thank God you came. Please... you have to get me out of here. I'll do anything. I'll sign the hotel shares over, I'll publicly confess to everything, just please... they are going to kill me in here."
"I already own the hotel, Julian," Evelyn stated flatly. "And you have already confessed to the feds. I am not here to save you."
Julian pressed his forehead against the plexiglass, sobbing pathetically. "Then why did you come? To gloat? To watch me suffer?"
Evelyn unclasped her briefcase and pulled out a single legal document. She slid it through the narrow transfer slot at the bottom of the glass.
"I am here to finish this," Evelyn said. "These are documents terminating all of your parental rights to Lily. Full, uncontested custody goes to me. You will never see her, speak to her, or attempt to contact her for the rest of your life."
Julian stared at the papers. "And if I refuse to sign?"
"If you refuse, I will walk out of this prison and accidentally leak the exact cell block you are housed in to Kestrel's remaining lieutenants," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "You used my daughter as a pawn, Julian. You brought a global terrorist into her life. I am offering you the chance to legally cease being her father. It is the only mercy you will ever receive from me."
Julian’s hand trembled as he picked up the pen provided by the guard. He looked at Evelyn, finally realizing the absolute monster he had awakened. He had thought she was a helpless, destitute secretary. He had never realized he was poking a sleeping dragon.
With a defeated, whimpering sigh, Julian signed his name on the dotted line. He pushed the papers back through the slot.
"Is Lily... is she okay?" Julian asked, a rare moment of genuine remorse flickering in his eyes.

"Lily is thriving," Evelyn said, carefully placing the signed documents back into her briefcase. "She has forgotten you entirely. And I will make sure she never remembers."
She hung up the receiver without another word. She stood up, straightened her blazer, and walked out of the prison, leaving Julian Sterling to rot in the concrete cage he had built for himself.
