Chapter 16: The Debriefing

The executive penthouse office of the Belmont Hotel offered a panoramic view of the bustling city below, a sprawling metropolis that had narrowly avoided absolute catastrophe just forty-eight hours prior. Evelyn Thorne stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, holding a cup of black coffee, watching the morning traffic. She was back in her tailored charcoal suit, her demeanor radiating absolute, unshakeable authority.

The heavy mahogany doors of her office opened, and Vance stepped inside, followed by a sharply dressed older man with military posture. It was Director Thomas, one of the highest-ranking officials in the CIA’s clandestine services.

"Evelyn," Director Thomas said, his voice a gravelly baritone. He walked forward, extending a hand. "Or should I use your old call sign?"

"Evelyn is fine, Thomas," she replied, shaking his hand firmly but briefly. "I left the agency five years ago. I only stepped back into the shadows to protect my daughter. Don't mistake this for a reunion."

Thomas offered a tight, respectful smile, taking a seat on the leather sofa. "You took down Anton Kestrel. A man the combined intelligence agencies of the free world have been hunting for a decade. You dismantled his hit squad, recovered a stolen Department of Defense drive, and delivered a global terrorist to our doorstep wrapped in duct tape. That is more than just protecting your daughter. You saved countless lives."

"I did what was necessary," Evelyn said, taking her seat behind her massive glass desk. She pulled a sleek, encrypted titanium flash drive from her drawer and slid it across the desk. "This is Kestrel’s personal ledger. I decrypted it off his secure servers before handing him over to your black-site team. It contains the names of every corrupt official, offshore shell company, and black-market buyer in his network."

Thomas stared at the drive, his eyes wide with disbelief. "This is the holy grail of international counter-terrorism. What are your terms, Evelyn? Name your price. The agency will write a blank check to get you back in the field."

"My terms are simple, Thomas," Evelyn leaned forward, her hazel eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "I am absolutely, unequivocally out. You will seal my file permanently. You will assign a ghost-team to monitor international chatter, ensuring Kestrel’s remaining loyalists never even look in the direction of my city. If anyone so much as breathes my daughter's name in the underworld, I will not call you. I will handle it myself. And you do not want me handling things myself ever again."

Thomas slowly picked up the flash drive, slipping it into his breast pocket. He recognized a promise when he heard one, and he knew better than to push a mother who had just taken down an empire.

"You have my word, Evelyn. Your slate is wiped clean. You are officially a ghost to us."

As Thomas left the office, Vance lingered by the door, a proud smirk on his face. "So, Boss. What's on the agenda for today?"

Evelyn smiled, looking down at the Belmont's quarterly earnings report. "Let's get back to business, Vance. We have a hotel empire to run."
