Chapter 6: The Ghosts of the Past

Evelyn watched the high-definition security feeds on her massive curved monitors. The two black, unmarked SUVs were no longer idling at the bottom of the hill. They were slowly creeping up the winding, private driveway toward her heavily fortified estate. Whoever was inside was trying to be stealthy, cutting their headlights and driving using night-vision optics.
They had severely underestimated their target.
Evelyn didn't call the local police. The local police were completely unequipped for a highly trained paramilitary hit squad. Instead, she methodically loaded a fresh magazine into her suppressed 9mm pistol, the metallic click satisfyingly sharp in the quiet office.
Julian had always believed Evelyn was just a naive, lower-class secretary when they met. He thought he was the powerful CEO sweeping a destitute woman off her feet. He never knew that "Evelyn Thorne" was a fabricated identity, a ghost profile created by the CIA’s most elite covert operations division. She had been their top field agent, specializing in corporate espionage and asset extraction. When she discovered she was pregnant with Lily, she had walked away from the agency, seeking a quiet, boring life to keep her child safe. Julian, with his mundane, mid-level corporate life, had seemed like the perfect, boring cover.
How violently ironic it was that Julian’s petty greed had dragged her right back into the underworld she had abandoned.
"Vance," Evelyn said, tapping her wireless earpiece. "Perimeter breach. Two vehicles, likely eight to ten hostiles. I am initiating protocol Blackout."
"Copy that, Evelyn. My tactical team is ten minutes out. Can you hold the line?" Vance’s voice was tense but professional. He was one of the few agency contacts who had followed her into the private sector when she built her corporate empire.
"I'll leave some for you if you hurry," Evelyn replied coldly.
She pressed a red button hidden beneath her desk. Instantly, the entire estate plunged into absolute darkness. The smart-glass windows turned completely opaque, locking down the house in a shell of bulletproof steel and titanium shutters.
Evelyn holstered her weapon and slipped out of her high heels, pulling on a pair of tactical boots she kept in her office closet. She stripped off her silk blazer, leaving her in a dark, form-fitting turtleneck that allowed for maximum mobility.

Outside, a silenced explosive charge blew the heavy iron front gates off their hinges. The muffled thump vibrated through the floorboards. The men in black tactical gear poured into the front courtyard, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the area with laser sights.
Evelyn didn't run toward the front door. She turned and sprinted silently up the grand mahogany staircase, her breathing steady and controlled. Her only priority, the only thing that mattered in this world, was sleeping down the hall. The game was over. The mother was gone. The operative had returned.
