Chapter 9 - The Woman on the Screen.

The ballroom did not merely fall silent.

It seemed to stop breathing.

Samuel stood frozen in the control booth above the crowd.

Charlotte looked from his face to the giant screen where her mother had returned in light and pixels.

Eleanor appeared tired in the video.

Her hair was pulled back, and the room behind her was unmistakably Suite 4201.

The date in the corner was two days before her death.

"Samuel believes he is protecting our family," Eleanor said.

"But fear has made him reckless."

Charlotte's throat tightened.

Samuel did not move.

"He has hidden evidence from me."

"He has made deals I did not authorize."

"And if he believes sacrificing one Vale can save the company, I no longer know what he will choose."

The video paused.

A buffering icon appeared.

Victor stepped toward the control booth.

"Shut that down."

No one obeyed him.

The shareholders were watching too closely now.

Charlotte turned toward Samuel.

"Deals?"

He did not answer.

"What deals?"

Julian recovered enough to speak into the microphone.

"This is exactly why the board needs stability."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Sit down."

Julian blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

For years, Julian had relied on charm to make people confuse laziness with ease.

Now, under the cameras, he discovered charm had limits.

He stepped back from the microphone.

The video resumed.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"Charlotte, if Samuel is beside you, ask him about Project Nightglass."

Samuel's face emptied.

Charlotte repeated the words.

"Project Nightglass."

Adrian looked at Samuel.

"What is it?"

Samuel descended the booth stairs slowly.

Every eye followed him.

He reached the ballroom floor and stopped beside Charlotte.

"An insurance policy."

"Against whom?"

"Victor."

Victor laughed from the stage.

"That is one way to describe extortion."

Samuel looked at him.

"You should not use words you understand only professionally."

Charlotte stepped between them.

"What was Nightglass?"

Samuel exhaled.

"I moved twenty million dollars out of a Solmere reserve account."

The shareholders exploded into whispers.

Charlotte stared at him.

"You stole twenty million dollars."

"I moved it."

"Without my mother's authorization."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Into a protected account Victor could not reach."

Victor spoke into the microphone.

"A private account in Singapore under Samuel's control."

Charlotte looked at Samuel.

"Is that true?"

"Yes."

Her stomach sank.

Victor spread his hands toward the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you are watching a family dispute disguised as corporate heroism."

"Samuel stole company funds."

"Charlotte broke into a restricted suite."

"And now they are presenting illegally obtained recordings as if theater can replace governance."

Several board members nodded.

Charlotte saw how quickly certainty could be rebuilt around a confident liar.

Then Eleanor's video continued.

"If Samuel tells you Nightglass was money, he is still hiding the important part."

Samuel closed his eyes.

Charlotte turned toward him.

"What important part?"

Eleanor answered from the screen.

"The twenty million was bait."

Victor stopped smiling.

"Every dollar was digitally marked through a forensic banking protocol."

The room quieted again.

"Anyone who moved Nightglass money after Samuel transferred it would create an irreversible transaction map."

Charlotte looked at Samuel.

He gave the smallest nod.

Eleanor continued.

"I needed to know who was inside Victor's network."

"The money identified eleven shell companies, three board members, two judges, and a law firm."

Victor's face became stone.

Daniel Mercer's firm name appeared on the screen.

Charlotte felt another twist of betrayal.

Then a second name appeared beneath it.

MERCER & KLINE - COOPERATING SOURCE.

Charlotte stared.

Daniel had been telling the truth about cooperating.

At least partly.

Eleanor continued.

"Samuel was not supposed to know the final destination of the map."

Samuel looked surprised.

"Neither was Victor."

A final account number appeared.

Adrian leaned toward Charlotte.

"That is not a bank account."

"What is it?"

"It is a Solmere room-number format."

Charlotte read the digits.

0907.

Adrian's face went pale.

"Room 907 does not exist."

Victor turned away from the screen.

That tiny movement gave him away.

Charlotte saw it.

"It exists."

Adrian looked at her.

"There are only six guest rooms on the ninth floor east wing."

Samuel understood.

"Not after the 1998 renovation."

He pulled a folded blueprint from inside his jacket.

"There was a records vault between 906 and 908."

Charlotte looked at the giant screen.

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"Charlotte, the blue ledger proves theft."

"Room 907 proves murder."

A collective gasp moved through the ballroom.

Victor stepped down from the stage.

"This meeting is adjourned."

Charlotte blocked his path.

"No."

Victor looked at the shareholders.

"This woman is under an identity injunction and has no authority to adjourn or continue anything."

A new voice came from the ballroom entrance.

"She may not need corporate authority."

Daniel Mercer stood there with two federal agents and a state investigator.

Charlotte watched Victor's confidence crack.

Daniel walked toward her.

"We have warrants for the financial records named in the Nightglass file."

Charlotte did not thank him.

"Room 907."

Daniel nodded.

"We came for it."

Victor looked at Vivienne.

Vivienne was already moving toward a side exit.

Charlotte saw her.

"Stop her."

A federal agent turned.

Vivienne ran.

She kicked off her silver heels and disappeared through the service door.

Samuel followed.

Charlotte ran after both of them.

Adrian shouted her name.

The corridor beyond the ballroom was empty except for one service elevator closing at the far end.

Samuel reached it too late.

The indicator began climbing.

"She is going up," Charlotte said.

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

The numbers stopped at nine.

Charlotte felt cold.

Vivienne knew exactly where Room 907 was.

Then every fire alarm in the hotel began ringing again.

This time, smoke appeared on the ninth-floor security feed.

May you like

Vivienne was not going to open Room 907.

She was going to burn it.
