Chapter 7 - The Lawyer Who Sold Her Name.

Daniel Mercer's voice filled Suite 4201 like a second betrayal.
Charlotte had known Daniel since law school dinners at her mother's house.
He had attended Eleanor's funeral.
He had held Charlotte's shoulders outside the chapel and promised that no one would steal what her mother built.
Five months later, Charlotte had hired him to lead the secret investigation into the Solmere Trust.
He alone knew the date and time of her return.
Now his recorded voice was warning Victor.
Charlotte pressed the recorder closer to her ear as if proximity could change what she heard.
It did not.
"Make sure Victor is ready for her," Daniel said again.
Another man on the recording asked, "Does she have the certificate?"
Daniel answered, "She thinks she does."
Charlotte looked at the empty leather folder on the bedroom floor.
The second man laughed.
"Then take it before she reaches the forty-second floor."
The file ended.
Charlotte stood perfectly still.
Victor stopped struggling with Samuel.
Vivienne stopped pretending she was not afraid.
Adrian picked himself up from the floor.
No one spoke first because everyone understood the same thing.
The conspiracy had been inside Charlotte's investigation from the beginning.
Samuel finally broke the silence.
"How much did Mercer know?"
Charlotte's voice sounded distant even to herself.
"Everything I knew."
"Bank records?"
"Yes."
"Witness names?"
"Yes."
"Where you were staying?"
"Yes."
Samuel closed his eyes briefly.
"Then we assume every safe place you have is compromised."
Charlotte looked at Victor.
"Did Daniel steal the certificate?"
Victor smiled without warmth.
"You should ask Daniel."
"I am asking you."
"And I am enjoying the first honest moment you have had all day."
Charlotte stepped toward him.
"Which moment is that?"
"The moment you realized money does not make you impossible to betray."
Samuel shoved Victor back against the wall.
"Enough."
Victor laughed.
"You still think this is about money, Samuel?"
Samuel's grip tightened.
"It was always about money."
"No."
Victor looked at Charlotte.
"Money is just how families like yours count power."
A sharp electronic chirp interrupted him.
Every light in the suite turned red.
Samuel spun toward the security monitors.
"What happened?"
Adrian looked at the ceiling speakers.
A recorded hotel voice announced a fire evacuation on the forty-second floor.
Samuel shook his head.
"There is no fire."
Vivienne's mouth curved faintly.
Charlotte saw it.
"What did you do?"
Vivienne said nothing.
The service elevator doors opened at the end of the hall.
Six private security officers stepped out.
They were not Solmere employees.
Charlotte recognized the logo on one man's jacket from Victor's outside security contractor.
Samuel grabbed the blue ledger.
"We need to move."
Adrian pointed at Victor and Vivienne.
"What about them?"
"They are not the priority."
Victor straightened his suit.
"That is the smartest thing you have said all night."
Samuel pulled Charlotte toward the hidden mirror.
Before they reached it, one of the officers entered the bedroom.
"Mr. Dane, we have orders to escort you downstairs."
Victor frowned.
"Whose orders?"
The officer did not answer.
Something changed in Victor's face.
For the first time, he looked like a man who had discovered he was not at the top of his own conspiracy.
"I asked whose orders."
The officer raised his weapon slightly.
"Sir, downstairs."
Vivienne stepped behind Victor.
"This is not your team?"
Victor ignored her.
Charlotte whispered to Samuel, "Who controls the contractor?"
"Victor did."
"Did?"
"Apparently."
The officer reached for Victor's arm.
Victor struck him with surprising speed.
Chaos erupted.
Samuel pulled Charlotte through the hidden mirror.
Adrian followed.
Behind them came shouts, breaking glass, and Vivienne screaming Victor's name.
Samuel slammed the panel closed.
They ran through the narrow maintenance passage.
Charlotte's ribs burned with every step.
"Where are we going?"
"Down two floors."
"Why?"
"Old freight control room."
"And then?"
"We get you out."
Charlotte stopped.
Samuel nearly collided with her.
"I am not leaving."
"Charlotte."
"Every time I leave this building, someone rewrites what happened inside it."
She held up the recorder.
"Not again."
Adrian looked back toward the distant noise.
"Then at least move before they find the passage."
They reached an iron ladder descending through a service shaft.
Samuel went first.
Charlotte followed.
Halfway down, the lights died.
The darkness was total.
Adrian's voice came from above.
"Power failure?"
Samuel answered below.
"No."
Emergency lights should have activated automatically.
Charlotte clung to the ladder.
Somewhere beneath them, metal groaned.
Then the ladder jerked.
"Do not move," Samuel said.
Another jerk came.
Bolts screamed against concrete.
Charlotte realized what was happening.
The ladder was being released from the wall.
"Samuel."
"Climb up."
The command came too late.
The upper bracket snapped.
The ladder dropped several inches.
Charlotte's hands slipped.
Adrian caught her wrist.
"I have you."
The second bracket began tearing free.
Samuel reached a side hatch and kicked it open.
"Jump left when I say."
Charlotte looked into the black shaft beneath her.
"How far down?"
"Too far."
The metal tore again.
Samuel shouted.
"Now."
Charlotte pushed away from the ladder.
For one weightless second, she fell through darkness.
Samuel caught her around the waist and dragged her through the hatch.
Adrian jumped next.
The ladder ripped free behind him and vanished into the shaft.
Several seconds later, they heard it crash far below.
Charlotte lay on the concrete floor, breathing hard.
Samuel shone his flashlight upward.
Someone had manually released the safety brackets.
"They knew the route," he said.
Charlotte sat up.
"Daniel?"
Samuel shook his head.
"Daniel knew your plans."
He aimed the light at a small maintenance panel beside the hatch.
"But only a Solmere engineer would know how to drop that ladder."
Charlotte stared at him.
"You said there were four people who knew the old elevator access."
Samuel's expression darkened.
"There were."
"You, Adrian, Victor, and the chief engineer."
Adrian slowly turned toward Samuel.
Charlotte felt the implication before she said it.
"You are the chief engineer."
Samuel did not answer.
Then a phone began ringing in his pocket.
He looked at the screen.
The caller ID said DANIEL MERCER.
Samuel answered on speaker.
Daniel did not say hello.
"Charlotte, if you are with Samuel Vale, get away from him now."
Charlotte stared at her uncle.
May you like
Daniel's next words landed like a blade.
"Samuel is the man who pushed your mother off the balcony."
