Chapter 14 - The Night Solmere Went Dark.

Darkness changed the Solmere Hotel faster than any legal order could.

Without chandeliers, polished marble, cameras, or glowing signs, it became only a vast building full of frightened people.

Charlotte moved through the service corridor with Samuel, Daniel, Adrian, and two federal agents using flashlights.

The intercom had gone dead after Julian's voice.

Claire's warning repeated in Charlotte's mind.

Do not come upstairs.

Charlotte headed upstairs anyway.

Samuel kept pace beside her.

"Julian has Vale access because Eleanor never removed him from the emergency family registry."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Why would she leave him there?"

"Because she thought he was harmless."

"So did I."

Daniel checked his dead phone again.

"The blast came from the west electrical room."

Adrian shook his head.

"That room cannot disable the foundation circuits."

"It can create enough confusion to evacuate security."

Charlotte understood.

"Julian does not want the building empty."

"He wants the guards somewhere else."

They reached the third floor through a staff stairwell.

Smoke drifted near the ceiling, but there was no active fire.

The ballroom doors stood open.

Inside, hundreds of guests crouched between tables while emergency staff used flashlights to guide them toward exits.

Victor was gone.

Julian was gone.

Claire was gone.

Vivienne remained under federal guard near the stage.

Charlotte crossed to her.

"Where did they take Claire?"

Vivienne looked at Samuel.

"Your daughter has terrible taste in protectors."

Samuel grabbed the back of her chair.

"Where?"

"Penthouse roof access."

Charlotte's blood went cold.

The roof sat directly above Suite 4201.

"Why?"

Vivienne looked at her.

"Because Victor's escape route is on the roof."

Daniel frowned.

"Helicopter?"

"Not exactly."

Adrian understood.

"The neighboring tower bridge."

An enclosed maintenance bridge connected Solmere's roof machinery level to an unfinished office tower next door.

It had been closed for years.

From there, someone could descend through construction elevators without using Solmere exits.

Charlotte turned toward the stairs.

Vivienne called after her.

"Charlotte."

She stopped.

"Julian is not helping Victor escape."

"Then what is he doing?"

Vivienne's smile held no amusement.

"He is replacing him."

Samuel swore.

Vivienne continued.

"Victor thought Julian was a puppet."

"Julian spent years making everyone think that."

Charlotte remembered the private guards paid through compromised Nightglass credentials.

Victor had not controlled them.

"Julian hired the security team."

Vivienne nodded.

"He also paid Daniel's junior clerk to copy your return schedule."

Daniel went pale.

"My clerk is missing."

"Probably because Julian stopped needing him."

Charlotte felt the conspiracy reorganize itself in her mind.

Victor had been the architect.

Vivienne had been the accomplice.

But Julian had grown up inside their system and learned from both of them.

He had waited until Charlotte returned, then used her attack to expose Victor's weaknesses while preparing to inherit whatever survived.

"He filed the injunction."

Vivienne nodded.

"Victor signed it."

"Julian arranged the judge."

"Yes."

"And Claire?"

Vivienne looked toward Samuel.

"Julian found her before Victor did."

Samuel's face hardened.

"He delivered my daughter to Victor."

"He delivered a useful asset."

Charlotte turned away in disgust.

"We are done here."

They climbed toward the roof.

The higher they went, the quieter the hotel became.

At floor forty-one, they found one of Julian's private guards unconscious beside the stairwell door.

His weapon was gone.

Daniel checked his pulse.

"Alive."

Samuel picked up the fallen access card.

"Claire may have fought back."

Charlotte hoped so.

At forty-two, Suite 4201 stood open.

Moonlight spilled across the soaked carpet.

Eleanor's safe remained exposed in the wall.

The balcony doors moved in the wind.

Charlotte stopped for one second at the place where her mother had died.

Then she kept moving.

The roof stairwell was unlocked.

Cold night air struck them as they emerged beside the mechanical towers.

The city glittered below.

At the far end of the roof, the maintenance bridge stretched toward the neighboring building.

Victor stood at its entrance with his hands raised.

Julian stood behind him with a gun.

Claire stood beside Julian, wrists bound with a plastic tie.

Her pearl necklace was gone.

Samuel took one step forward.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

Confusion crossed her face.

"Who are you?"

Samuel stopped.

Charlotte felt his pain.

Julian laughed.

"Family introductions later."

He pressed the gun against Victor's back.

Victor looked furious rather than frightened.

"You have no idea how to run what I built."

Julian smiled.

"That is your problem, Victor."

"You still think you built it."

Charlotte stepped into the moonlight.

"Let Claire go."

Julian looked at her.

"The real Charlotte."

"Congratulations on passing the quiz."

His smile widened.

"You were always funnier than people said."

"You were always less stupid than people said."

Julian laughed.

"There she is."

Daniel raised his voice.

"Julian, federal agents are behind us."

"Then they can watch."

Julian pointed at Victor.

"This man murdered Eleanor."

Victor snapped, "You have no proof."

"I have all of it."

Julian nodded toward Claire.

"She copied the archive before Charlotte unlocked it."

Claire shook her head.

"I copied what you told me to copy."

"Same thing."

Charlotte looked at Claire.

"Did you send the file called Samuel's Confession?"

Claire nodded faintly.

"Victor made me upload it months ago."

Samuel exhaled.

Charlotte continued.

"Did you activate the hotel kill switch?"

Claire shook her head.

Julian answered for her.

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because once the lights come back on, every agency in the country will be inside this building."

"I needed ten minutes without cameras."

Charlotte looked toward the bridge.

"To escape?"

"To clean the board."

Julian raised the gun slightly.

"Victor goes over the edge."

Victor stared at him.

"Claire confesses to working with Victor."

"Vivienne takes the fraud charges."

"Samuel disappears again."

"And you?"

Julian looked at Charlotte almost affectionately.

"You become the brave owner who survived an attempted coup."

Charlotte frowned.

"Why would you help me?"

"Because you will need a chief operating partner after tonight."

The arrogance of it almost stunned her.

"You think I would put you inside my company after this?"

Julian's smile vanished.

"You will if you want Claire alive."

Samuel stepped forward.

Julian pointed the gun at Claire.

"Do not."

Samuel stopped.

Claire looked at Charlotte.

Her eyes were steady now.

"He is lying."

Julian glanced at her.

Claire continued.

"He was never going to keep me alive."

Julian struck her across the face with the back of his hand.

Samuel lunged.

A federal agent grabbed him before he crossed the open roof.

Charlotte's anger went perfectly still.

"Julian."

He looked at her.

"You made the same mistake Vivienne made in the lobby."

"Which one?"

"You thought humiliating someone made them powerless."

Julian smiled.

"This is not a lobby."

Charlotte looked toward Victor.

"No."

"It is better."

She raised the small digital recorder from Suite 4201.

A green light blinked on its side.

Julian's face changed.

Charlotte had activated it before entering the roof.

"The archive transmitter has an independent battery."

Samuel understood.

"The building can go dark without killing the off-site feed."

Julian looked toward the mechanical tower.

Charlotte smiled for the first time that night.

"Everyone just heard your plan."

Sirens rose from the street below.

Julian's eyes became wild.

He grabbed Claire and backed toward the bridge.

Victor moved suddenly.

He struck Julian's gun arm.

The weapon fired into the air.

Claire dropped to the roof.

Samuel ran toward her.

Julian and Victor crashed against the bridge railing.

The old metal groaned.

Charlotte saw a support bolt shear away.

"Get off the bridge."

Victor shoved Julian.

Julian grabbed Victor's coat.

The railing broke.

Both men disappeared from view.

Charlotte ran forward.

She looked over the edge.

Victor hung from a maintenance cable several feet below.

Julian clung to Victor's ankle.

Victor looked up at Charlotte.

For the first time in twenty years, the man who had controlled Solmere was begging a Vale for help.

"Charlotte."

Julian looked up too.

May you like

"Do not let go."

The cable began to tear.
