Chapter 11 - The Confession That Should Not Exist.

Samuel did not touch the server.
He stared at the filename as if it had accused him aloud.
Charlotte watched his face for the smallest sign of recognition.
There was fear.
There was anger.
But there was also something worse.
Understanding.
"You know what that is," Charlotte said.
Samuel shook his head.
"I know what someone wants you to think it is."
Daniel stepped toward the console.
"Do not touch anything until the forensic team images the drive."
Charlotte ignored him and tapped the screen.
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Charlotte."
She looked at his hand.
He released her immediately.
"That archive may be the most important evidence in the case."
"Then we should hear it before someone sets another floor on fire."
Daniel had no answer for that.
Charlotte selected the file.
A video opened.
Samuel Vale appeared on screen.
The timestamp was six months earlier.
He sat in the very vault where they now stood.
His face was bruised.
One eye was swollen almost shut.
The Samuel beside Charlotte whispered, "No."
Recorded Samuel looked into the camera.
"My name is Samuel Thomas Vale."
His voice was weak.
"I am recording this because Eleanor is dead, Charlotte is missing, and I no longer know which of my memories are safe."
Charlotte looked at her uncle.
He had gone pale.
The video continued.
"Victor's people found me three weeks after Eleanor died."
"They kept me below the old service garage for nine days."
"They wanted the Nightglass access codes."
Samuel touched the scar beneath his collar in the recording.
Present-day Samuel unconsciously touched the same scar.
"I did not give them the codes willingly."
"But I gave them enough."
Daniel looked at Charlotte.
"That explains the contractor payment."
Samuel shook his head.
"No."
"It explains how they got one authorization seed, not why the payment happened tonight."
The recording continued.
"If someone uses my credentials after this date, assume the credential set is compromised."
"Do not assume the transaction is mine."
Charlotte glanced at Daniel.
"He knew."
Daniel nodded.
Recorded Samuel leaned closer to the camera.
"There is something else."
"I was on the balcony when Eleanor fell."
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Samuel closed his eyes.
The federal agents remained silent.
Even Vivienne looked away.
"I followed her outside because she had taken Victor's phone."
"She believed it contained the master account list."
"Victor followed us."
"Vivienne followed Victor."
The video flickered.
Charlotte heard her own heartbeat.
"Eleanor stood near the railing."
"Victor grabbed her wrist."
"I grabbed Victor."
"Vivienne grabbed the phone."
"Then someone hit the balcony lights."
Samuel paused on screen.
"In the dark, Eleanor lost her balance."
Charlotte's eyes filled despite her effort to control them.
"I caught her hand."
Present-day Samuel whispered, "Charlotte."
She lifted one hand to silence him.
"I had her."
Recorded Samuel's face broke for the first time.
"I swear to God I had her."
"Then Victor stepped on my wrist."
A sound escaped Adrian.
Vivienne stared at the floor.
"I let go."
Samuel's recorded voice collapsed.
"I let my sister fall."
Charlotte could not move.
For eight months she had imagined her mother's final second as an empty accident.
Now she saw it differently.
Eleanor hanging above the city.
Samuel gripping her hand.
Victor pressing a shoe onto Samuel's wrist.
The image felt more real than memory.
Recorded Samuel continued.
"Victor told police I pushed her."
"He showed me footage from an angle that made it look possible."
"Then he threatened Charlotte."
"I disappeared again because I believed staying near her would make her a target."
Charlotte looked at Samuel.
"You let me believe she was alone."
His voice was barely audible.
"Yes."
"You let me bury her thinking she slipped."
"Yes."
"You could have told me."
"I was ashamed."
"That is not protection."
Samuel flinched.
"I know."
The video had not ended.
Recorded Samuel wiped his face.
"There is one detail I have never told anyone."
Everyone turned back to the screen.
"When Victor stepped on my wrist, he was not wearing his own shoes."
Charlotte frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Recorded Samuel continued.
"He was wearing Solmere staff shoes."
"Black, nonslip, size eleven, with a silver service stripe."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Executive service shoes."
Samuel nodded.
"Only senior operations staff receive that stripe."
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Adrian stiffened.
"Do not look at me like that."
"I wear a size nine."
Recorded Samuel said, "Victor changed clothes after Eleanor fell."
"He wanted the cameras to identify someone else."
"I believe he intended to frame an employee."
A still image appeared from an internal security camera.
It showed Victor entering an elevator after Eleanor's fall.
His shoes were black with a thin silver stripe.
Charlotte leaned closer.
A number was printed on the side.
17.
Adrian went pale.
"Employee locker number."
Daniel asked, "Whose?"
Adrian stared at the image.
"Mine."
Everyone looked at him.
"That is impossible."
He backed away from the screen.
"My locker was seventeen."
Charlotte remembered his initials in the ledger.
A.C.
His father's death.
The threats against his daughter.
The way Victor had controlled him.
"Victor planned to frame you for my mother's death."
Adrian looked sick.
"Maybe."
Vivienne finally spoke.
"Not maybe."
They all turned toward her.
She had wrapped a fire blanket around her shoulders.
Soot streaked her face.
"Victor kept Adrian alive because a frightened witness was more useful than a dead suspect."
Adrian stared at her.
"You knew?"
Vivienne laughed bitterly.
"I knew everything except when Victor planned to sacrifice me."
Charlotte stepped closer.
"Then tell us who killed my father."
Vivienne's eyes met hers.
"Victor did not."
Charlotte felt the room contract.
"Who did?"
Vivienne looked toward Samuel.
Then Adrian.
Then Charlotte.
"Eleanor."
Samuel shook his head.
"That is a lie."
Vivienne's expression did not change.
"Your mother killed Thomas Vale."
Charlotte moved so quickly Daniel stepped between them.
"Do not."
Charlotte's voice was low and dangerous.
"Do not use my father to bargain."
Vivienne reached into the torn lining of her black coat.
Two agents raised their weapons.
"Slowly."
She removed a tiny brass key and held it between two fingers.
"Thomas left a private deposit box in the original Solmere bank vault."
"Eleanor spent years trying to find this key."
Charlotte stared at it.
"What is inside?"
Vivienne smiled without pleasure.
May you like
"A letter your father wrote the night before he died."
"And if you read it, you will finally understand why Eleanor was willing to let the world believe his death was natural."
